Looking for info on a trip in mid March
I'm looking on going on a 5-7 day backpacking trip in mid march and was wondering if anybody knew of some good trails to take. I'm thinking maybe New Mexico or Utah - somewhere where it isn't too cold at that time. If anybody knows of good trips to take in that area or time of year I'd appreciate your insight. Thanks a bunch!!

In March, I'd head for the Gila Wilderness. Be prepared for stream crossings and cool nights.

Does "New to this" refer to backpacking or just new to the site? If new to packpacking you might be biting off a considerable chunk with a 5-7 day trip. Perhaps some weekend trips nearby would be worth while.

My first trip was as a senior in high school with three friends, 7 nights in Shenandoah National Park. Do your homework and your prep, and you can do it.

agreed

did not mean to imply otherwise...
I was including the weekenders in with the prep and homework... along with the fun

I forget about that because I started doing overnighters in the backyard in kindergarten and overnighters in the adjacent woods in jr high. :D

Well I canoe camped for 12 years before I did my first "Backpacking". I was with a ADK group on the Whites Prez range. What a gas.

I'm just new to this site. I'm an experienced backpacker-usually in Wyoming and Colorado. I'm just not familiar with the Southern Rockies. I've done up to 21 days in the backcountry - I'm just looking for a nice week long trip where the days are warm in mid March

I still say Gila Wilderness.

The Superstitions in Arizona, possibly southern California, possibly the Gila. We did the first 111 miles of the GET last March - from First Water TH in the Superstitions to Mammoth. There are a lot of options in the Superstitions. Copper canyon in Mexico would be good that time of year. Utah is far enough north you'd still find a lot of snow and cold temps. March is spring break in many places, so be prepared for crowds.
