Thas right...
A good ole gear thread!

Anyway, I was wondering about using a softshell instead of a WB shell. Now, a softshell isn't probably going to be able to beat my 10oz. patagucci wb shell. Maybe not even my classic Marmot windshirt, especially when I treat it with nixwax.

Now, what exactly are the advantages of a softshell? Breathable, water resistant? Is that it?

Sorry. Waterproof/breathable e.g. Goretex, etc.

Johnnywalker needs shoftshell trousers because he sweats too much for G-Tex. G-Tex, however, will protect you much better from rain and really harsh wind. JW wear a TNF G-Tex top, BTW.

I assume Johnnywalker wears a North Face Goretex top, by the way. :)

So, it that the appeal? High areobic activity and it provides some water/wind resistance? Seems like my marmot windshirt does that pretty well...

I wore my marmot windshirt in 20 degree weather with a lightweight wool baselayer underneath it...and I got steamy in it....

After that experience, I'm thinking I really like my old OLD worn out (not nearly warm as it used to be) fleece jacket...and if its really friggen cold and or the wind is howling, I find that the driclime jacket fits underneath the fleece quite nicely to block the wind.

I've not seen the attraction of the softshell jackets - other than they look "outdoorsy" on the pretty people walking around the malls.

Yeah, I mean, that's sorta it, eh Roam? It looks "less outdoorsy"?

i like soft shells better cause you can eat the whole crab...you don't get all messy and cut your hands up like you do when cracking open a hard-shell crab
