Cute...but years from now the kid is going to use the photo of that hat to say he was emotionally scarred (LOL)>

A friend of mine's 5 year old was on a hike the other week. That evening we were sitting around the fire and it looked like my friend's pack was levitating...the little guy was doing his best to put it on like "daddy" (LOL) thank God the guy is a ultralighter.

How do you handle diapers and wipes and formula/milk and solid foods and sippy cup and all that? Seems like that would add a lot of weight. Plus, you've gotta pack those dirty diapers back.

Mutt, you just leave that stuff in the trunk and walk over and get it when you need it. Duh.

The tent was set up in the kitchen of my house. My wife made me do it !!! I'll have to wait a few more years for the real camping shots. :-)

One question.....does he carry his own stuff?
Really....cute kiddo ya got there, mines 22 now..they get big too quick....enjoy him all you can while he's young, but you'll really enjoy him when he's telling you "Come on Dad, keep up..."

Mutt, you use powdered formula, bag the diapers and carry them out. Cereal and formula don't weight anything. I used the bottles that have the plastic liners when we took Abby backpacking. You can buy paper liners for disposable diapers so the waste is easily buried; the rest of he diaper doesn't weight that much. The hard bit is finding a baby carrier that has enough cubic inches to carry all the stuff you need, plus what the baby needs.

Minish, very cute little guy!

So, do you change your baby on the ground, or do you bring a blanket or burp cloth?

What about baby's circulation? Mine didn't like being in a sling for very long. Enough for the typical time in a store, but not all day. Do you stop and spread out a blanket or something?

And what about naps? Do you stop every two hours for 30 - 60 minutes to let Baby sleep?

That paper liner thing sounds interesting, but wouldn't that irritate baby's delicate skin?

Sass, what baby carrier did you find that does that?

I used a Kelty Expedition. It had 3500 cu inches of space (biggest I could find at the time), also had stirrups for the baby's feet so they could bounce around a bit. Abby would sleep in it while we hiked. I don't think they're making one as big anymore, but I haven't been looking. We sold ours to laqtis. He may still have it. It was very heavy.
Mutt, the paper was soft, much like the inside of a disposable diaper. I had a z rest we used for Abby to play on. The first trip she went on she ate a huge handful of dirt while we put up the tent. She survived though.

I got a pickup camper when my kids were little, and we car camped till the youngest was 6. Its nice to have a roof over your head, and a table and stove when dealing with little brats, plus knowing you could sleep in the dry. From the car camp, we went on short hikes. Living in Idaho, my kids thought camping meant camping next to a hot springs. I hope you get some hiking miles out of that kid in the years to come, minish223.

good on ya.

Carried my stepdaughter camping (with her mom and siblings when she was still in diapers - car camping at least. :)

She LOVED it - slept like a, well, um, a baby in the woods.

Thanks, Sass. I have seen a variety of models out there. I found some cool ones a while back that allowed up to 45 lbs of weight...

That's why you breast feed. And I think I remember freeze dried baby food that could be mixed up, but that was 14 years ago, so it's kinda fuzzy. Cheerios don't weigh much.
