Devastated Forrest!
So... A few threads ago I was lamenting the demise of Off-Trail camping in the RRG.
In another thread I went on a rant against those savages who destroy the forrest!!!

Well... this past weekend, Snackers and I went to the RRG... Actually, my Father and I got there ahead of Snackers and tried to find a nice flat ridge-top upon which to camp...

We pulled over and walked out onto several promising ridges only to find that they had ALL been devastated! Trees cleared out... Everything that could possibly be burned had been... It looked terrible and kinda made me sad...

Tunnel Ridge Road had restrictions in place for the last year or two... I think this created a situation where people just didn't feel like camping off Tunnel Ridge road and decided to head out Chimney Top Road instead...

This lead to MANY MORE people camping off Chimney Top than usual... and this lead to the destruction I witnessed.

We eventually found a nice, dark little place that hadn't been camped in for a long long time... It was rather nice...

Thing is: After seeing what has happend in the RRG, I am no longer opposed to the new restrictions that are rumored to go into effect this year. Actually, I welcome them!

If there are no restrictions, people will just beat the place to death... and I really don't want that... :)

But But...Icky its NOT YOUR property...who cares (LOL)....you want REAL devestation....? go to the old Soviet Union and visit some of their National Parks...(LOL)

Imagine if a forest were Privately Owned...you go through a security gate, sign in..pay a price (which would cover upkeep) and then the low life (HILTONSCUMOFTHEARTH) would not be able to go destroy it.

Fires have not been permitted in the eastern zone of the High Peaks Wilderness since about 2000 due to the impact of people collecting firewood. The high use areas are improving, but have a long ways to go.

It is my property... It's OUR property... National Forest.

If it were privately owned, would that mean the owner would be able to Log or drill for Oil if he/she wanted to?

Or would they be restricted to leaving the place "wild"?

Or would they be able to cut down trees and build Hotels and Cabins all over the place? Swimming Pools, Roller Coasters??

How would private ownership work, exactly?

Wowza.

Hey, if you guys think the fire destruction is bad now, just wait until global warming takes off and all the forests burn because people did so much driving to enjoy their favorite "nature" spots.

LOL...looks like the way things are going the Global Warming will leave the forests so full of SNOW...(LOL).

Icky , don't know how old you are...but you probably haven't realized that the word Gullible is not in the dictionary.

I'm with you on this one. Wild places should remain wild if it takes restrictions than so be it. I don't like the Idea of private anything owning places like Yellowstone. I don't want to see go-cart tracks and mini golf inside our national parks.

Hell I would even go as far to say the roads that are already in our national parks should be torn up. Walk if you want to enjoy the wilderness !!!!

As a gimp... I think I should be able to fully avail myself of all the amenities of the national properties. Lose the cables on round top... I want that wheel chair accessible in compliance with the ADA

???? Elitist attitude?

Trees leveled... every resource picked clean... Not sure what part of my attitude is responsible for such destruction...

And it IS destruction... If ALL the trees were to be cut down and burned then there'd be no forest at all, right?

To cut down soooo many trees in such a small area is highly destructive.

What other adjective should be used?

I had a forester in a congregation I served. He asked me one time.. "What is a 70 year old clear cut called?"

I couldn't answer...

"A forest" he said. The entire state of PA was laid bare in the early 1900's. We now have some wonderful lush forests. I am not endorsing the mismanagement of forest lands. Not do I support the mountaintop removal mining techniques. But I must say my parishioner changed my attitude toward a lot of the forestry issues. I grant you... It can be ugly.

The other thing is I find the idea of propety of any kind or any ownership without restriction to be a pipe dream. You would no sooner open your home to a bunch of rowdy drunk neandrathals than you would expect a public park to put up with that kind of activity.

How bout this idea, lots of people would LIKE to say they are "outdoorsie types" but they really have no desire to put up with the drudge of hiking, camping in the woods etc.

So we find a way to "assist" them in claiming hiking rights. Here is what we do. The people who have REALLY spent their time hiking have to "return" some of their camping hours and photos to the government. Say you spent the time to plan a week long trip, you go to Whereever National Park. You spend a Glorious week hiking, having fun and taking photos. You get back to the main gate and they will ask you to turn over your photos. They will then take oh...25 or 30% of them to redistribute to those people who didn't win life's lottery and cannot afford to take off a week of their time.

People will apply to the United States Department of the Interior (like they have anything to do) to the newly created "Outdoorsy Activity Division" and will demand their RIGHT to have memories of the outdoors.

For their application they will be provided the completed Trip log from your trip, and a few photos to show their friends.

Now for the people who have braved the AT or similar MONTH long trips...that will be seen as even a LUCKIER group and they may have to give up as much as 75% of their trip memories and information.

Think of the fun, then Jimbob and his Wife Heifer can stay home, watch the tube and get a package each month from the Government with THEIR own Camping memories!!! WOW what a great idea.

And for you lucky evil rich who can afford to take all that time off....you get to contribute (whether you want to or not) to helping your fellow AMERICANs or illegal aliens.
