I think it is pretty sad that most people want to stay close to the road, I don't care if that's Elitist or not, but to counter that, features like Skyline Drive open up the wilderness to people who wouldn't go there in a million years if there wasn't a road - while the entrance fees and gift-shop purchases help maintain the rest of the park.”

Ocala NF seems an exception, tho. Last TT hike there, I did not see the first four wheeler track on the FNT, yet we were surrounded by ORV trails.

Bryce Canyon NP was teeming with tour buses, autos, campers, pedestrians, etc. Yet I shared my multi-site camping area with only a flash flood and a horny toad.

“I like that fact that all those people drive into Yosemite Valley for the day, pay their twenty bucks, and stay in the valley checking out the gift shop and oohing and awing at Yosemite Falls from the bridge below. It allows me to pay my twenty dollar annual fee and go to the park as much as I want for the next twelve months.

On any backcountry trail in Yosemite you will meet people. Not that many but most are people I don't mind sharing the outdoors with.

The only people I have met on trail I didn't care for were two rangers; one known as ranger 'dick' and I didn't get the others name or psuedonym.

The people who don't leave the trail or go more than a mile are helping support my addiction and I am grateful.”

“We've visited a lot of national parks, monuments and wilderness areas and have almost universally found that once we get five miles from the trailhead, we have the trail to ourselves. The backcountry just isn't that crowded, even in the popular parks.

It is a bad thing that front country visitation is down though. As has been said, if people don't feel connected to the natural world, they won't see any reason to pay money to protect it. Say goodbye to the wilderness areas. Say goodbye to the trails. Government protection can be rescinded any time, or they can do what is currently done - simply refuse to monitor and maintain what is currently "protected". A natural area that is turned over, de facto, to the ATVs is no longer natural.”

I think the theme is that now kids are into video games and computer stuff. Taking kids out with boy scouts is a way to get some kids into the outdoors. Pamela is a good example of that.”
