Why would you tolerate this bunch of wannabes Tuckerjoe? Why not leave us to our pretending? Maybe over in your backpacker.com womb everyone needs to constantly remind each other how much a backpacker each person is--maybe they think if they tell themselves that enough, eventually they'll start believing it's true. Around here the folks don't seem to need that reassurance or don't need to try to justify their activity to others.

If you don't think real backpackers make up a large pct. of the posters here, go ahead and check out. This forum was here before you came along, it will be here when you leave.

Perhaps you should sign up for a trip like the bearmagathon and show us just how badly we can get blown off the trail.
I post here frequently, and I backpack at least once a month. Furthermore I do not involve myself in any of the arguments that go on here, and am not in the minority in those actions. Please rethink your post. Such broad generalizations about a large group of people based upon the actions of a few are incorrect, and prejudice. This is the only forum that I regularly post on and am proud to know these folks. There are some very accomplished hikers here, and some real athletes as well. Clearly you are making comments about people you don't know anything about. People I'm proud to call my friends.
This is very much, a community, with all the facets of such. There are bound to be arguments, but here they are not edited and sterilized like they are on many other sites. If you don't like that, don't go away angry... just go. But perhaps you would like to stick around and really get to know us and see that we talk about all the facets of our lives here not just one, and that is what makes this place beautiful. Many people put their heart into what is posted here. It's real.”

“It's funny Tuckerjoe, I originally went over to backpacker.com before I came here. I even went on a trip with somebody. But I almost never go over there anymore because the hateful arguing over there makes trailtalk look like kindergarten. Each time I've gone back and checked it out, same thing.

I did enjoy their "chat" feature, and would often chat with a few "cool" individuals that didn't get into the mean-spirited debates, but they seemed to be the exception to the rule from my perspective.

“My favorite thing about the other side is their posts to trips ratio. Preacher had nearly 5,000 posts on bp.com and did his first trip in 10 years with us, forgot his stove as well as some other important gear, took the 3 mile shortcut on a 7 mile trail and then left early. Just think of how many other people over there with thousands of posts are offering advice to people on gear and backpacking when they don't practice it. If Fridge, GatherNoMoss, or Gemini told me a piece of gear was crap I'd believe them because I've hiked with them and I know they would have actually used it vs. just reading the specs and spouting them back online. Tuckerjoe must not be at 5,000 posts yet over there so he can do his first trip, so he must not like it that he's not a real backpacker yet.”

I quit posting trips over there, no one ever signed up.

I figured it was because I wasn't one of the cool guys. My post count is in the hundreds.

I feel so inadequate.

“I too am no longer a backpacker....for 4 weeks only . I have to wait for this stupid cast to come off. Had to back out of a winter trip next week. Couldn't figure out how I could hike in the snow and not get frostbite on the poor little toes hanging out. But I was nice and let my friends use the sled......

“Kind of an embarrassing story. We went for a snow shoe adventure kind of late in the day. There were four of us with 3 pairs of show shoes. I figured...wth...use mine I have good boots. I proceeded to post hole all along the way.

When we got to the groomed section of the trail I did a silly little 'dance' and landed hard. Needless to say...training for the X-Games is not for the middle aged! ;o) It was a VERY long 3 miles back to the car. Two days later when I went to the doctor I was very surprised and humored to find the ankle was broken with torn ligaments, nerve damage,.etc., etc.

So....here I sit whilst my friends enjoy the winter scenery and my Mountainsmith Sled. How are you?”

I don't sit around the campfire on the trail talking about the merits of my tent or the relative R values or our sleeping bags.

I prefer to shoot the #&%!$ and generally just hang out with folks that are alot like me in their enjoyment of backpacking, concern for nature and appreciation of the trail. I don't agree with everyone on every topic, but I enjoy the comraderie and the exchange of ideas that takes place in the back country.

I have said it before, and I will say it again.....this site is what it is. I come here because it is as "close to the campfire" as you can get without being there.

“I visit both TT and the other side when things get slow at work, and one thing I have noticed is that the other side seems to have more members located west of the Mississippi River and TT has more members East of the river, which is good for me because I am in the East.

There may not be a lot of BP talk on here, but people on TT do really backpack, I know I have backpacked with a lot of ya. We will see if the other side really backpacks, they are supposed to be going to Sipsey later in March and I am thinking of going down that weekend also.”

“i have been on backpack trips with many on this board. not only do they backpack but they are fairly experienced at it. there is a lot of sharing of best-practice and everyone seems to have either something to offer or something to learn. we get a newbie now and then, which is a good thing, but there are a lot of solid hikers in this place. it has been a privilege and the best of fortune to get to know everyone i have had a chance to hike with.
