This trip is from the summer, I don't think I posted it before. I scouted the upper Mehoopany Creek with a friend of mine, Jay. Besides hiking I also like whitewater kayaking and we were scouting this creek. This is a beautiful wilderness area with no marked trails. The game lands combined in this part of the state exceed 100,000 acres. We descended as far as we could with mountain bikes then proceeded up and down the stream. As we road the bikes, there were thousands of dragonflies and they would fly up around us in a cloud. We also encountered a surly snapper.

The creek is very beautiful with waterfalls, slides and ledges. The water was low due to the drought, but it made it easier to explore. We saw a black bear across the creek but it went into the woods before I could get a picture. It was a rare and thrilling sight. We called the waterfall "mythical" because it took us two trips to find it, and began to doubt its existence.

There were signs of the lumber era- old grades, foundations, cribbing, etc. It's now all grown over.

Another cool feature were these rocks with cool mosaics of different colored lichens, I believe.

A great trip in a hidden and forgotten place.

What is a "surly snapper?"

Google directed me to this thread for the answer!
