As questions swirl whether British Prime Minister Gordon Brown paid a dictator's ransom when he released the Lockerbie bomber last week, the Libyan strongman's son said it was "obvious" that efforts to free the convicted killer were tied to lucrative contracts with the oil-rich state.

"Why be so angry?" asked Saif al-Islam al-Qaddafi in an interview with the Scottish Herald, responding to the international uproar ignited as Scotland freed Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man ever convicted in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 270 people.

Al-Megrahi, who is dying of prostate cancer, was sentenced to life in prison for the crime but served only 8 years of his sentence — just 11 days in prison for each of his victims.

In the week since his release, pressure has been mounting on Brown to explain his government's role in securing the al-Megrahi's freedom, possibly as part of the so-called "deal in the desert" struck by Britain with Libya two years ago.

AH history just nails the libbies everytime
“Ok - Scotland and England are separate countries. As are Wales, Northern Ireland, and Ireland.

Scotland and England are not the same place.

Great Britain is the geographically connected England, Scotland and Wales.

The United Kingdom is short for "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland"

The British Isles is the United Kingdom plus Ireland.

Scottish law has always been distinct from the law in England and Wales for a start. They have a separate but similar legal code.

But since Scottish devolution a lot of power has shifted only to the hands of the Scots, and is no longer under the control of the United Kindom Parliament (which I guess you meant when you said 'Jolly Old England').

This decision was made by the 'Scottish Justice Minister' who controls the legal system in Scotland.

this would be distinct from the person who would make the decision had he been imprisoned in England and Wales, who would be the Home Secretary. (There's a Lord Chancellor who has other judicial functions, but that just complicates things).”

Foreign Secretary David Miliband defended the report in a BBC interview and confirmed details that emerged in the documents but adamantly denied that the government took any active steps to secure convicted bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi's release.

"We did not want him to die in prison, no, we weren't seeking his death in prison," Miliband said.

Documents released by the Scottish government on Tuesday included the minutes of a meeting with Libya earlier this year during which it was stated that Bill Rammell, then a foreign office minister, told Tripoli that neither the prime minister nor Miliband "would want Mr Megrahi to pass away in prison but the decision on transfer lies in the hands of the Scottish Ministers."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1219743/Britain-worst-place-live-Europe-despite-big-pay-packets.html

Britain is the worst place in Europe to live despite offering the biggest salaries, a study revealed today.
High incomes in the UK are cancelled out by long working hours, poor annual leave, rising food and fuel bills and a lack of sunshine.

Researchers weighed up official data for ten European countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Poland.

Entitlement????
http://stossel.blogs.foxbusiness.com/2010/02/15/entitled-to-a-five-bedroom-house/

Entitled to a Five-bedroom House
Many of our “leaders” want to make America more like Europe. When President Obama was in Europe, he praised the “social safety net that exists in almost all of Europe that doesn't exist in the United States."

Vice president Joe Biden called paying higher taxes "patriotic."

Europe does have a bigger “social safety net.” But the gain comes with pain: Europe’s higher taxes and bigger government lead to slower job growth and higher unemployment. Politicians always claim that the safety-net will be limited to “necessities for the truly needy,” but such government programs always grow.

An article in today's UK Daily Mail illustrates how over time, welfare states begin to offer monstrous entitlements:

A single mother-of-six is getting more than £80,000 [$125,000] a year from the taxpayer to live in a £2million mansion in an exclusive London suburb.

Essma Marjam, 34, is given almost £7,000 a month in housing benefits to pay the rent on the five-bedroom villa just yards from Sir Paul McCartney's house and Lord's cricket ground.
She also receives an estimated £15,000 a year in other payouts, such as child benefit, to help look after her children, aged from five months to 14.

The four-storey house in Maida Vale has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a double living room... two large flat-screen televisions ...

Welfare fraud? No -- the government stands by the payments:

Miss Marjam said: 'I moved here at the beginning of the month as I'm entitled to a five-bedroom house.

'I was in a three-bedroom council house but I needed a bigger place once my new baby came along. So the council agreed to pay the £1,600 a week to a private landlord as they didn't have any houses big enough...

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said..."Only a very small minority of people receive such high rates of housing benefit."

I just loved reading the responses to that blog. Some of them were downright hilarious.

I did find this one to be of interest.

America was functionally literate, experienced low crime rates, minimal incarceration rates, low rates of unwed pregnancies, etc.... in the past. Today, these deleterious societal diminutive characteristics are the result of the explosive growth of minorities and illegals in the USA. Blacks espiecally cast a pall of ignominious and dubious social blight.

Here is an option:
How about employers pay employees directly without taking out taxes, then have employees send the tax the employee deems appropriate to the Treasury Department. I figure I would send in about 8% to 10%. That seems about right to me.
An important point here is that taxpayers fund EVERYTHING that any government agency does. When the feds grant money to the states, that is tax money. When a city rebuilds a road using the 'street fund' that is taxpayer money too. I am sure all of you know this already but I have to remind myself from time to time.

I have been paying full tax rate ever since I came to the US. Now i discover Income is actually unlawful here as it was never passed in congress. Some Senator or other was ready to go to jail for non payment. Maybe someone has that You tube vid or report.

Exactly XL...EVERYBODY pays..so why raise the cost of something if you end up paying without any significant gain?...you raise the price, your taxes (many of which you did not previously pay anyway) rise with the increased income.....

Moot discussion anyway...you think ANY elected offical will vote to pay taxes he doesn't currently pay?

There are MANY multi-Billion $ Corporations that pay ZERO.

ST...sigh...read the Fair Tax book. What happens is everyone pays, but there is a "rebate" from the government for "necessities". IN this way even the illegals end up contributing to the system. As it is the "cash economy" makes it to where people work often making scads of money but no real record exists.

In this way each time someone buys something the tax is already part of the price.

Hey hel, I like it. I imagine the only tax you would have to pay would be on purchases (like sales tax on fuel and such). No property tax, no sewer use fees, no water bill....damn, that is living right!
