saving water

“I just did my dish washing. When I pulled the plug and saw the water slowly draining out of the sink I remembered how little water we used when we cleaned dishes on our NOLS course. I think we cleaned our pots, pans, dishes, cups, cutlery and everything with as little as one cup of water! We never flushed a toilet. We never started a washing maschine. We never had a shower. Maybe we used half a cup of water to clean our teeth and some other sensitive parts.

Do you know how much water you can save simple by going backpacking and staying away from all these water consuming/wasting procedures?...huh?!

Think about it.

“not to fuegoize this thread but i've never understood the concept of "wasting" water...you use it, it gets treated and put back into the supply...more like just moving it around...where's the waste?”

“take a lot of effort/cost/energy to make what you run down your garbage disposal suitiable for drinking again thrifty... not to mention what goes down the toilet and washing machines.”

“I use more water to get the stupid food out of my braces than I do washing dishes. Backpacking this year is going to be fun in dry camps. I think I will have soup those nights so I don't need a quart of water to remove all the flavor savers....

I grew up on wells and have had TWO wells go dry in my lifetime...and yet I really don't worry where I live. I live next to a lake and if needed I'd go bail water. I have done that before on the Island when well #1 went dry. Well #2 we had a swimming pool that we used for toilet flushing till we sunk another one.

Having said that I enjoy a lengthy shower every day and you are required to flush the toilet in my house. The old yellow DOESN'T mellow, no it REEKS like piss and stinks up your house.”

“I used to live walking distance from Lake Ontario... Talk about an open sewer that people pissed in.... gack... I used to watch people fish for carp from a bay nearby... makes my tummy turn just thinking about it.”

“Around here the local environmental regulators and the sewer districts are charging and countercharging at each other about the high costs of upgrades or alternatives to keep nitrogen out of the Chesapeake Bay.

Nitrogen in wastewater comes from #1.

If you do #1 outside and not in a toilet, problem solved.
