What's your criteria? Best scenery? Widest? Smoothest? Biggest number of miles? Paved? Number of switchbacks?

I heard that Iowa was actually the most scenic hiking state.

The best trails have streams, trees and footbridges. I get sick of mountain vistas. They all look the same.

ya and they're paved. None of that icky mud and dirt.
And all those rocks! they're a liability!

most stream-lined trails I've seen are much muddier, dirtier and rockier than the ones leading to mountain tops. Maybe it's just in PA, WV and NC where I typically hike.

A good friend of mine wants me to hike with a group in Minnesota, but I don't know anything about the trails there.
Does anyone know about the trails or hike there

I looked into some trails there a while back. It looked pretty hilly which surprised me. I thought it would be much flatter.

Florida, believe it or not. From the Big to Apalachicola - aboundment of trails and exoticals.

And Wyoming.

Oh - South Dakota. And New Hampshire. Hell, all of New England.

But Nothing's finer than Carolina - though Utah gets the nod because of the best being Montana, which trails Michigan behind my Georgia.

If we're not looking for "trails" I'd much rather hike off trail... with that I'm going to say that Alaska has the best lack of trails.

WaterGremlin - I love the trails in MN, personally I tend to avoid the SHT, and spend most of my time on the trails in the BWCA, incredible hiking.

The best trails are the worse trails, that is, the most difficult trails. If a trail is not a tough challenge, it is not worth doing. Otherwise, there is no feeling of accomplishment when one reaches a destination.

continued.
GSMNP has it all: from a paved trail to rocks, mud, multiple and difficult creek crossings, altitude changes with some steep areas, four seasons for hiking, the risks from animal encounters, etc. Even stopping a boat shuttle to let a bear swim across in front

All things considered (quality, quantity, variety, vistas, year-round access, etc.), I would have to say California.

I hiked in the GSMNP and it was nice...but IMHO not as spectacular as the Sierra Nevadas (Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon NP, etc.)...not to mention Anza Borrego, Trinity Alps, Shasta, the coast, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, etc.

I dig the trails in PA. One of the best trail systems in America. I am trying to devise a plan to thru-hike Pennsylvania. A hike plan that includes the AT, Tuscarora Trail, Midstate Trail and gets you to the Ohio Border.

Phil is SO Wrong!
No reason to come to Calif., the state doesn't have any money to maintain the trails, too many people, too hard to get to the trailhead...Don't come to Calif.

Why does every state have a politician to represent it as the Clamber of Commerse?
In California don't carry documents on north -south trails.

Ya know, other forums usually have a page or two of answers before the topic goes to ****. TT is just so much more efficient than those other sites.

Try Colorado!

41 separate and distinct designated Wilderness areas - many separated only by a county highway.

Not to mention Rocky Mtn National Park.

I've actually been enjoying all the trails in Arizona. From the Arizona Trail www.aztrail.org to the Maricopa County trail system www.maricopa.gov/parks/MaricopaTrail. From deserts to beautiful mountains and forests.

+ When the rest of the country is experiencing winter is the best time to hike Arizona.
- When the rest of the country is hiking is too damn hot to hike Arizona.
- Too many venomous snakes.
