How many hiking clubs are there in NC? Any worth being a member? I just gave up my membership to one I was in for a long time due to moderator ego problems. Just wondering if there were any other ones worth joining, or should I just stick to the TT crowd.

Ditto.

Ego problems is an understatment. I hate I gave the owners over there the benefit of the doubt for so long. Its pretty clear today what their true character is.

carolina hikers yahoo group. I was banned for replying to a new member looking for fellow hikers by saying that the group had gone comotose lately and then posting links to here and backpacker

I have been a member of that group for a long time and once went on many hikes with them. Its a shame the new moderators consider it THEIR group instead of everyone's group.

and then my posts were placed under "must be approved by moderator" status. Only because I questioned why?

HEY Carolina Hikers moderators...(since you don't look over here I'm sure you'll never see this...insert sarcasm font) Jesus may love you but I think you're a C*#@%#

do we need to do this? Lets just start a different group or just post here. I have fond memories of Carolina Hikers. I think I will just remember when Gregg was running it

It just made me mad that Hyway was the one who introduced me to Carolina's Hikers in another forum, but they banned him when he put in a little plug for TT. It's a shame.

No but now that I've got that gag order off me. I had to say it.

Yeah when I joined that group back in 2003 it rocked. Gregg, Allen and every member made that group feel like home.

It was where I took that first trip to meet you bill and the others. Good times.

They talked about expanding the group, trying to get new members, then they ban Hyway for nothing. In the meantime other members speak up for Hyway, their posts get deleted, and the moderators will not admit they were wrong. So far 4 members have quit, (5 counting Hyway).
Everyone knows Hyway has pushed the limits a few times, but this was nothing of the sort.

CH has not had much over the last few years. I've been to Rogers with the group twice. Groups have ups and downs. TT is so big its hard to tell if its ever down. I've done one TT trip. Me, I usually wander around by myself or with my son. Sometimes I take friends, ones who've been hiking with me for 20 years. They know I plan and cover the details. They worry whenever I say "Trust Me". I haven't killed anyone yet, a couple got a little chilly but none lost any digits.

So when do youse want to join me, we'll have fun; Trust Me!! HEHEHEHEHE

Well hyway & bill start a new club.

GatherNoMoss, Hyway and I are working on it.

One thing I like about groups is not just meeting other hikers, but discovering new hiking trails. There are a lot of places I have been that were introduced to me from someone else. If it wasn't for them I would have never known about it.
I don't have many opportunities to hike like I want to due to my job. So it's hard for me to make plans for long hikes, besides after taking 6 months off in 2006, I promised my wife I would cut back on my hiking.
Edoc, I will hike with anyone if I get the chance.

I joined the Carolina Hikers yahoo group a few months ago. I was really hoping to join them on a trip, but there is no way now. I dumped them. I am sure there are lots of good folks in this group, but the moderators are on some ego trip. The posting rules are way to stringent for me and I find that very unwelcoming. Besides, the TT'rs from the Carolina's a way cooler.

Mildbill? Hm, I used to know someone with a trail name similar to that. He hung around with some rough company then. Hm, I think I recognize some of these others....

Actually, Rox started the group and invited Gregg to be a moderator. I notice that Gregg isn't a moderator anymore. I thought the group had more life when Gregg was active, because he managed it better. He would let stuff run for a while and when it started getting sour, he'd say something clever and get everybody back on the right track. Alas for the old days, and alack too, for that matter.

gregg didn't treat it like HIS club. He treated it like OUR club. Rox always looked at it as if we were guest in her house.

Truly though, too be thrown out after years of active membership (not so much lately as was no one else) just for saying "the group has gone comatose lately" to a new member looking for people to hike with seems a bit heavy handed.

Hey Bill,
I haven't mentioned this to many folks, Hyway is one, but Scooter passed away last Fall due to cancer. As I mentioned to Hyway, this has had me bummed out for months. We were able to get in one last hike around the end of September up at Table Rock. She didn't seem to be in pain and died suddenly at home. I decided the best thing to do was to jump back in, so I brought home a Brittany puppy on Christmas eve. He has a very sunny disposition, which some of you might find an improvement. Unfortunately, being a bird dog, he's tearing up the house and frazzling everybody's nerves. I'm trying to get him house trained so we can go hiking. It's good to be back on Trail Talk.

welcome back to TT then. Like I said before, I knew you and scooter were tight and it must have been a very heavy blow for you to lose her. And contrary to popular opinion, scooter and I did not have carnal relations at the Hootenanny. She was always true blue to you.
hyway

Oh man, I am so sorry to hear that. I liked Scooter. Good luck with your new dog, and it's good to hear from ya.
I hate what happened on CH'ers, but it really made me (and a lot of others) angry. Rox's last post "so be it" just made my blood boil. I used to hear a lot of the older members talking about her and I thought they were over doing it, but now I see. The whole situation could have been handled better.

Thanks for the kind words about Scooter. She was a dear soul to me and my wife, but she definitely had some socialization issues. Thanks for the reassurance, Hyway, but a true Southern gentleman would deny even knowing the lady in question.

This all is the latest blowup since the 2006 pogram following the Labor Day Hike. We puzzled over that one for a long time and finally decided one of the group ratted us out. I note that he still posts on this board, although not on this thread. I guess carrying a pack for somebody builds relationships.
I never did hear a report on the 2007 Labor day hike. I was having a heart catheterization and oddly enough, didn't feel like going. Anyway, things must have gone ok, as the axe didn't fall until now.

Wow Bill..I'm sorry to hear about Scooter. I have fond memories of her just about taking off a few of my digits as I approached to give you a hug. :)I respected her for standing her ground ALWAYS! I'm sorry to hear her passing.

Frantic...I forgot I ran into him and his wife at the grocery store last summer and they told me they were moving back to the UK (you know his wife was from there) I guess they're there by now.

New Group is created....and being fine tuned..stay tuned. Link should be up by next week sometime.
