Updates on private threads

“Why do we have private trips and then "publicize" the trip with a thread.

It's like, "hey, look people, we are going hiking without you"”

No one knows when there has been an update to a private thread or trip unless they think to check. With this crowd that is a real long shot, so I just put this here to kinda jog the memories of the folks involved. No need to get jealous. I'm not bragging or teasing about anything.”

“It's not a matter of jealousy. I just see these types of threads and wonder. I set private trips and don't invite the entire world.

However, I go to the trips page and send out a mass email if I need their attention. I don't "publicize" my private trips.

Just my casual observation.”

“All of my Trips are open to anyone. I like meeting each and every one of you. I have learned a great deal from everyone I have met on trips and am greatful to have gotten to know you. Thank you.......now about this private stuff......what trip are you talking about? is this a trip that mostly women are invited too! Or is it a trip for men only and no women! Or is it just a small bunch of folks who really like the crowd they want to backpack with and Control who is going to be invited! Or is it just a private trip for members of an elite group of Backpackers who are part of an underground movement to start pushing out all those who are not welcome!
I duno what this private trip stuff is all about. I do know I like the diversity of meeting new people on every trip, and seeing old friends from previous trips.”

“It's hiking the knobstone. The only reason it's a private trip is because of the miles being covered, 30+. The only reason I'm on the list is because I run support for the hikers.”

“Ok, the reason I put the thread up instead of sending an e-mail is becasue the e-mail doesn't seem to be very reliable. This post had absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone who was not involved with this trip. It does not mean I don't like anyone here, and 99% of the time I, like Fridge, am very happy to meet new people, and get to learn new things, as well as see old friends. This trip is not for that type of thing. It is not social. If it works out, it might be repeated, as a public trip, but this time I would like to a bit more cautious of the attendees, and the total numbers also. “meangreen - You definitely jogged my thinking! Half the fun of TT is reading about all the wonderful trips being planned. Sometimes I even try to contribute a little to the planning, even if I cannot go. And I do go on a few trips. In fact, I met Father Goose and Bitpusher in person by joining with them on the last night of one of their "public" trips. I had planned to meet them sooner, at Blood Mountain, but I went the wrong way on the AT in northern Georgia!

Even worse is reading trip reports from private trips. If this is the way some want to do things, I would be happier if they did it on the "other side!" But whatever!

Of course, it is all my own fault. I've been an outsider ever since I exposed that the main trips of the Indiana and Chicago Area Hikers were to the Downtown Chicago Restaurants. I was only joking, but I did get raked over the coals for it.

I do enjoy meeting up with TT'ers. But I still can do my own thing, just as before joining Thebackpacker.com.

In all sincerity, enjoy a wonderful trip, no matter wherever it is. I'd love to go, but I'm busy! Next Saturday I'll be testing for my first Black Belt, which will be in Aikijutsu/Jujutsu. (In English, it is Defensive Combat. It is not a sport; there are no competitions and no rules. For the classroom and for testing we do modify techniques to try and prevent injury to ourselves and classmates.) Then I'll be packing to take my old bones on a four month backpacking Trip. Guess I should keep it a private trip and leave my TT'er ID Pin-on Badge at home.

I still know this woman who is looking for a single guy who backpacks. Now am I invited....just kiddin but I am serious about the gal. I mentioned this too you several months ago.”

“nowslimmer.....I actuall was curious and thought this was a bogus joke on me so I declined the first year. When the second year came along and I was invited I said okay and was e mailed specific info with rules most being about kepping this trip under closed rap. When it was the day to meet I e mailed the trip queen and told her I had to bail and that this trip was safe and will never be spoken of on location. I went to the parking area and low and behold I was flabbergasted.....I knew who the trip leader was and I knew the car she drove...I was stunned to find out this trip is alive and doing just fine. Like I said, I will never tell who the Trip leader is and the only way you're going to find out anything is to be invited. IMAO..this trip leader is very smart and knowledgable about many TTer's and knows the ones who will keep this trip under Raps. I have said enough here....maybe they will invite you!”

“Be sure and post after private trip pictures, like the annual private Sierra Trip.

Posting public TT pictures of a private invitation only trip and dicussing how great the trip was is always classy.”

“Fridge, that is my old standby pic for a girl I work with that is a major whiner. Whenever I hear her down the hall crying about how she wants to go home, or she's hungry, or her boyfriend is being a jerk, or how she's tired, or whatever...I email that picture to her.”

“Hey all my trips are open, but none of you weenies ever join one.

As for private trips, I've never down one here, but recently did one over at midwesthiker, as it was a cabin trip that only slept 5 people”
