Any opinions/research re: letting a fever run its course or doing Tylenol, motrn, etc? I've had Upper respiratory bug x 6days, and today for the first time have a temp of 100.7--not a biggie, just wondering if I'm better off letting my body fight unassisted.

I had a fever for 12 days once and eventually wound up in the hospital. My doctor told me to take Tylenol to bring it down, but it was ranging from 101.5 to 102.5. I'm not sure what to tell you, but if it gets higher than it is now just take some Tylenol if you don't want to deal with the fever. The infection may be getting worse if you are developing a fever, maybe a trip to the doctor might be in order.

Thanks Rich. I'm a nurse and have used drugs all my life to fix stuff :)--The last few years have become aware that maybe our bodies do better in the long run without so much help from the pharmaceutical companies. Mostly wondering if I will get better faster if I just tough it out. I'm not in any danger, just really annoyed--has surgery (thyroid)10 days ago, and 3 days later got sick and have been coughing my lungs out ever since. Dr. said it's viral, so I just want to do whatever will speed up the process--even went out for a nice hike today for a mental health break! I think resting is making me sick!

I read once that if an cold or respiratory infection is from the throat up, it's okay to exercise in moderation, but if it's in the lungs then it's not a good idea.

I hate taking medicines myself and avoid them if I can, especially since I can't even swallow pills. I dissolve them in water and drink the mixture and it generally tastes terrible.

I hope you feel better soon.

...a fever is a symptom, in this case brought on by a virus. what is important is that you found out why you had a fever. treating the fever is mostly a matter of comfort. i personally rest better without the chills of a fever and this rest is, in my opinion, better for me than the fever. so i take ibuprofin every 4 hours but only when the fever makes me uncomfortable.

feel better soon!

i was suffering a cough... the remenants of a cold. i can't rest with a cough so i call my doctor and get the good cough syrup and sleep like a baby... same idea as the fever i guess.

here are some natural ideas. Of course a no brainer is taking a bath in tepid water and running cool water over youre wrist if the fever is rising but here are some more options: you can drink some teas such as feverfew, cinchona bark, and/or white willow. also meadowsweet, sea buckthorn, european holly, and mugwort. a poultice can also be made from echinacea ROOT to help lower the fever. Linden tea can be used to induce the sweating to help break a fever.
Enemas of catnip tea can also be used to lower the fever quickly and keep it down, it also helps with constipation and congestion which tend to keep a fever up. you can also add peppermint to the teas which might help the taste and it has it's benfits to. these are some things that might give some relief without having to feed the drug industry anymore money. Hope you start to feel better.

ok, so this is a personal thing i recognize... but i can't imagine my hatred of the drug industry nor my discomfort from a fever being so bad that i would consider a catnip tea enema. lol!

I generally just bundle up my neck and stay hot until my body fixes the problem. It's usually smarter than I am.

I had that URI with mild fever for three weeks (probably would have helped if I had actually taken a sick day) but I finally went and got a week's antibiotics. I hate taking antibios...but they are working.

Fever over 103 is dangerous. For breaking a fever here is a trick I learned a few years ago. You can take acetomenophin, or Ibuprophen or asprin every 4 hours...but if you rotate the meds you can usually get away with rotation every 2 hours. If I do that over night....I will see the fever break.

Any infection that begins to effect your respiratory system is serious. Remember once it is in the lungs...it can go to the Circulatory system.

Thanks all! I'm going to listen to my body--it says yes to peach brandy and no to catnip enema! Will try the other teas recommended, though and will check out the natural healing book. thanks

I've been doing a good job of taking Ibuprofen every 4 hrs. Sat I felt like the fever was mostly gone so I didn't take anything last night. I felt like death this morning and had a fever or 101.3. Even when I got the fever down I still felt really bad. I've felt as bad today as I did on Friday when it was 103.4

Ice packs wrapped around my head help fevers quite a bit.

I have the dang flu. I had a fever of 102. I got a prescription for Tamiflu. I took it around 11, and the fever has already broke. I'm sitting in a tee shirt and feel warm. This morning I had to bundle up in my winter parka.

I had the flu for 3 days last week. Felt like crap, no energy, high fever, chest and sinus congestion. Tues. & Wed. fever at 101.7. I was drinking a lot of fluids, taking some ibuprofen and Nyquil to keep the cough down. At 6 PM on Thursday, I was worried I might have to get in a cool bathtub and I was already freezing with a temp of 103.2. By Thursday night at 10 PM, the fever had broken and my temp was normal. I was lying in bed with the covers off and I was still warm. It was probably around 60 degrees in the bedroom. I was down for the count for 3 solid days.

By Friday morning, I was feeling much better, but still not ready to run a marathon. I rested over the weekend and feel pretty much back to normal, except for a little bit of chest congestion.

A lot of people around here have or have had the flu recently.

I wish I had a fever. At least those end. I swear I have chronic death syndrome. I have been fighting a cold for about two weeks (no biggy its february right), it turns into a sinus infection and a mild flu. The doc gives me antibiotics for the sinus deal last friday (after missing 2 days work) and I am worse now. Out of work till thursday with f'in bronchitis.

I had no idea I could sleep 16-18hrs a day and still be exhuasted.
