I just went to target, and got these Eddie Bauer trekking poles. Not high quality by far, but they are so cool. They have a flashlight on one, and a compass on the other. I also picked up a heavy duty poncho that folds out into a tarp for shelter. Under 40 bucks for them.

i would trust that compass like i would trust a screen door on a submarine!

the best thing i've purchased from Target lately was a bunch of quickdry shirts and boxers for around $4 each! great baselayer for sweating while hiking!

ditto on the shirts - cheap wicking is always a good buy. I purchased my pair of trekking poles from target and have used one of those pair for hmmmm, lessee about 5 years now! THey aren't Eddie Bauer brand, and they aren't as light as the high priced ones, but as far as bang for the buck goes, i don't think you could beat it. last year one of them failed and no matter what i did couldn't make the section tighten up. 5 years use for a 20 buck set of poles is hard to complain about.

Yeah, they dont owe you anything. I wouldnt trust the compass ever, but come on, thats pretty wicked.

When my buddy decided he wanted to try hiking we went to Target and bought him all kinds of cheap fleece, a big old pack and other stuff. After 5 years this stuff is still going strong. I bought my wife a pair of the Swiss Gear poles for $10 a piece and they work fine.

Almost all my fleece came from either Target or KMart.

Most of it I have used for more than 5 years and it is in good shape.
