Just curious what kind of knifes y'all carry when you BP. I carry a regular old pocket knife myself. Can't imagine needing much more.

Depends on the trip....
Most trips I carry a leatherman wave...that's it....

On long trips in National Forest Lands or wilderness areas, I add an Alaska Knife Company Bush Camp Knife like this one.....

It's lighter than an Axe and using the Battoning technique you can use it as one.

I carry a Leatherman Juice as well but I have never had to use more than the knife blade. I may switch to a small Gerber knife that weighs in at .6 oz.

I carry a special edition Gerber that my wife bought me several years back. It was quite expensive 90.00 at the time but it has been a great knife and I will more than likely use it for years to come.

I carry a leatherman, I also have a swiss multi tool that is equal quality but with some slightly different options. The knife I carry is one I use for bping and normal use is a Kershaw Ken Onion 1550st self assisted opening knife. This is by far the best knife I have ever owned and light weight. easily opens with the push of a finger. I dropped mine from the top of a rail car at work once it fell about one story open to the asphalt below and only bent the tip of the blade but the amazing thing was I shipped it priority mail to kershaw on a Monday, Friday morning there was a brand new one in my mail box.

A friend of mine calls it "the deadly jam-spreader,"   LOL   There never were any Orcs around so I never saw it glow.

Nowadays it's resting comfortably in a cool dry place....   a victim of benign neglect.

Can somebody tell me what is the law there? I know in some places a blade of a certain lenght is considered a weapon.
I have a very nice swedish hunters knife, that I usually have with me when camping. The blade isn't that long, just 3.9 inches.

EH, it varies by state, but in TN it is 4" for a fixed blade. However, more the most part it involves the context in which it is carried.

A knife carried into a bar is scrutinized much differently than one carried in the field.

It is not the length that is a problem, it is because that knife is considered or can be considered a dirk or dagger knife. Which is illegal to carry, not own.

mmmm...if I don't carry the knife on me, (let's say concealed under my jacket), but I keep it in the car, or it's deep down inside my backpack - will that make a difference?

I know some of you say they carry a gun in their backpack when hiking.

The difference in what you are writing about is this, its illegal for you to have certain weapons in your control outside of your home, or out in the public. Each state can allow each city to have different codes on weapons, so that can make a difference also. The length of blade is important, but so is the type of blade, and the action of a blade. And unless you are a licensed hunter or have a reason for having a fixed blade on person, becareful as to where you take such a knife. It does get tricky, I got popped inside of the SSA office this week, but I had the dogs and guns outside in the truck with the license, so its just a pain in the butt. You can get in the wrong place without even thinking quickly.

I already have a Sabatier chef's knife, but the others will be from Grohmann. A buddy visited their factory while on a school trip to the East Coast.

Cold Steel 4" Tanto blade Voyager.
That thing stays within my reach at ALL times!
Its by far the best steel I have ever owned. I use it just about every day and I only need to sharpen it about once every other month or so. It can hold an edge like no other blade Ive ever had!

Hitime, I agree in part and disagree in part with your analysis.

The relative intent is controlling.

39-17-1307. Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.

(a) (1) A person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4")....[Emphasis Added].

I think blade type would be highly relevant as to intent if you don't look at the context of when and where it was carried. IMHO, the prerequisite intent would not be present by someone carrying the knife I own while backpacking....assuming they don't make some other overt act that may be a basis of intent. (Such as carrying the knife around on their hip or in such position as to make it appear to be threatening.)

I carry the knife in my pack. It would take at least two separate and distinct acts before I could brandish it.

That seems contrary to laws which specifically cite concealment   (I was just looking over North Carolina's and Georgia's again a moment ago).   Whenever I've carried a larger knife backpacking, I've always worn it on my hip to avoid concealment issues.

As you say, there's concealment where the knife is not readily available, but I didn't see any distinction like that being made (?)
