it's hard to beat the standard deduction unless you have a lot of mortgage interest and medical bills.

Put what you owe the IRS into an IRA. Did that one year. Then it's deductible. Better to give it to yourself than the IRA. Doesn't affect the total $ outlay, but at least you're getting it?

Haleakala was sweet too. Everywhere was really. We stayed with my friend who was in Honolulu on business. We were able to get over to Kuaui for a couple of days and Maui for a few as well.
