Winter Waterfalls- Delaware Water Gap TR

Met some friends from college for a hike to the Delaware Water Gap, the weather was blustery, but not too cold. The clouds were lifting out of the gap as we reached the trailhead. We hiked up Mt. Tammany along the Red Dot Trail. This trail is steep in sections with several icy areas, plus the 4 inches of fresh powder didn't help, but we got to the top and took in the great view. We didn't stay long because the wind was pretty fierce. We descended along the Blue Trail to beautiful Dunnfield Creek with its cascades.

We then drove to the northern part of the park to take in Dingmans and Raymondskill Falls. They were breathtaking with the power of the water. Silverthread Falls was also great. The falls weren't frozen over, but were surrounded by icicles and buttresses of ice.

Bobo made a boo boo?

Great pics Jeff! Hiking to Tammany and doing a loop via the fire roads up top, the AT, and the Dunnfield Trail is one of my favs.

I love all those waterfalls but I wish they were frozen over. Ice climbing this winter in the area has been dismal.

Bobo,

"Hiking the Allegheny National Forest" is my third book.

Pennsy,

On the state game lands near where I live looks to be an incredible place for ice climbing, completely unknown. But it's tough to get too. Looks to be about a 200 foot ice wall, glacial blue, and since its north facing I've seen it hold ice into May.
It is in a very steep glen with waterfalls, but the biggest ice walls are formed by springs from the cliffs. I've made a few attempts to penetrate the glen, but the terrain is extreme.

The ice walls are so significant you can see them from the road a couple miles away.

Hold the ice, I'd like to see that place neat.

Bobo,

Sure I can sign one for you.

The ANF is nice, make sure to visit:

Minister Creek
Morrison Trail
Hickory Creek Trail
Tanbark Trail
Tracy Ridge Trail System

Clarion River is beautiful between Ridgeway and Irwin Run with some great off-trail hiking.

Hearts Content and Tionesta National Scenic Areas feature incredible old growth forests.

I'll be making my third attempt to enter the glen this spring summer, since this effort may claim my life, I better bring company...

Sounds like a job for RichB (and anyone else!)

It's a 5 mile hike (one way) through the wilderness just to reach the rim, where the earth falls away.

The glen isn't far from a road, but it's all posted.

ANF trail book
Hi Jeff! (and everybody) I just read "Hiking the Allegheny National Forest" and it was great (bought it at REI). I'm new to the Pittsburgh area and your book really opened my eyes to what is available near here. I grew up hiking and backpacking norhteastern PA (esp. Ricket's Glen and Roaring Creek watershed) but got out of it a little when I moved to Pitts. Now I can't wait to get back out! I'm planning to hit Minister creek in EARLY April for a quick overnighter first, maybe some longer trails after I get re-acclimated to the wild.

Quick question about the ANF: Do you think a bear canister is necessary in the park, or would a nice high rigging do the trick?

Thanks!

Thanks. There are black bears in the ANF, but they are not a common sight. I've never seen one in the ANF, but others have reported them around the reservoir.

High rigging will be fine, the ANF does not have near the bear problems as the Adirondacks or other places.

Minister Creek is regarded as the gem of the ANF. I also like Morrison Trail, probably more than Minister Creek. Tracy Ridge, Tanbark, and Hickory Creek are all very nice.

Closer to Pittsburgh is Ohiopyle State Park, one of my favorites, very nice dayhikes. McConnells Mills is awesome. Also check out Laurel Highlands Trail and Quebec Run Wild Area is a really nice place for a quick overnight.

You also need to explore the Quehanna Trail, which may be closer than the ANF.
