Mean-spirited trolls are immature schmucks that have been given the latitude to post anonymously so they can't be held accountable for the demeaning and derogatory shat that they spew. In the long run, they do nothing but lessen the value of this board. I used to tell all my backpacking friends about thebackpacker... not anymore.

My email and webpage are posted in my profile, so a real name could be figured out quite easily if anyone wanted to. I understand that if people do not want to provide that information publicly, they don't have to. Trailnames are indeed used on the trail to declare anonymity (and I've run into a number of peeps on the trail I wouldn't even tell them which direction I was hiking!), but when you sign up to post on any public board, you have to provide the moderator with your email (and sometimes other personal info), so that you can be held accountable to the rules and regs of the board. In my limited time of 5 years on this board, "trolls" were typically not hateful and looking for a laugh, and I do believe there was a hint of moderation back then and some folks paid the price for repeated harrassment. Can we really say the board is the same as it has always been?”
