“I just watched INTO THE WILD for the second time, and I am amazed at the Story of Christopher McCandless. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_McCandless” 6:10:15 PM 3/05/08 “Is it out on DVD now?” 6:19:52 PM 3/05/08 “ijust watched it as well and thought it was well done in a different way.iread the book a few yrs agoe” 6:29:13 PM 3/05/08 “Yes, it was released yesterday.” 6:29:25 PM 3/05/08 “I think it's coming to Dish soon. last edited: 3/05/08 6:35:14 PM” 6:30:19 PM 3/05/08 “I watched it last weekend and it did indeed effect me a great deal. It made me think a lot. It made me feel like I haven't done enough with my life. Which I think is a false reading because I have done a lot and if I died tomorrow I've had a great life. The movie made me crave adventure. I also came to realize that it changed my opinion of him and his death. I still think he was immature and selfish. Many people get all doe-eyed about how he died and say, "Oh it's wonderful! He died doing what he loved!" (ala Grizzlyman) which I believe is absolute bullcrap. Ultimately he died by his own hand due to his own lack of responsibility but he owned the consequences. John Krakhaur(SP?) and Penn did a great job on the fil even if it was slow in parts.” 4:04:00 AM 3/06/08 “I really enjoyed the movie as well. It moved me and made me think about my life just like Nigal. I think I even cried when he died. For me it was quite an emotional ending. I would love to go to that bus someday to see what the area was like. I don't know how much I would blame his death on his lack of responsibility... I thought I remember reading in the book that the seed he ate was poisionous, and there was another seed just like it thatasn't poisonous. I believe John Kraukauer wrote that even expert biologists have a very hard time distinguishing between the two seeds. Only the indigious Indians are able to tell. So while he should have been more careful, I personally can't blame him for being ireesponsible.” 4:27:09 AM 3/06/08 “Sounds to me like if you've got two seeds, nearly indistinguishable, and one is deadly poisonous, and the other is good for you, if you eat one, you're playing Russian Roulette. Not very responsible.” 4:54:15 AM 3/06/08 “It wasn't the seed that killed him. It was his total disregard for gaining knowledge of the area he was in. He died, because he walked in over frozen rivers/creeks but couldn't walk out through raging rivers filled with snow melt. If he had a brought a map or explored up and down the river he would have found a crossing. As it was he had neither and had to return to the bus and stay longer than he planned. It wasn't the first time his poor planning skills put his life in jeopardy, just this time when he rolled the dice, there wasn't anyone their to pull his bacon out of teh fire. I don't vilify nor glorify McCandless. He lived his life the way he wanted to live it and he died doing it. Its no different than anyone else who dies doing what they love doing.” 6:29:50 AM 3/06/08 “I can't glorify McCandless. He was stupid and irresponsible. He was selfish and delusional. Enough said.” 7:34:45 AM 3/06/08 “some people think backpacking solo is stupid and irresponsible. It was his life, he lived it like he wanted.” 9:29:44 AM 3/06/08 “I agree with Hyway. good luck to him for going out there and doing that - but I'm not sure we should be celebrating his stupidity as he could have so easily avoided death.” 9:32:33 AM 3/06/08 “It wasn't the seed that killed him. I'll be hitting blockbuster soon. As far as CM. Just remember he was pretty young, his stupid mistakes were due to his immaturity.” 9:36:24 AM 3/06/08 “monk?” 9:49:21 AM 3/06/08 “Both hyway and Y2 have good points, yes it was his life and he should be allowed to live it his way. To explain my stupidity comment, he was just not prepared, no maps, no gps, no knowledge of the area. No knowledge of survival skills, the list goes on and on. My selfish comment. Sure he was his own person, but to die due to stupidity is the same as suicide. Selfish. Delusional, he thought he could walk into the wilderness with 25 pounds of rice and a .22 rifle and survive. It takes more than that. Irresposible, ties ito the selfish part so I guess I was a bit redundant. Glorifying someone because they lived their life the way they wanted is not a valid argument. Besides, his "wilderness" wasn't really a wilderness! Would you stand over the casket of your sister had she lived the life she wanted to by being a heroin junkie, and a prostitute to pay for the habit. I don't think so, but she lived her life the way she wanted to.” 9:50:15 AM 3/06/08 “plus, i cant identify with dying doing something i love. i'd rather die doing something i hate” 10:09:17 AM 3/06/08 “I guess it's easy to pooh pooh McCandless. We're all backpackers (well, some of us :^P) and like to think we're all dialed in when we head into the backcountry. Sure, he was not prepared for what he undertook. But, I think his story is about passion, which he had plenty of and may have been what ultimately led to his demise. It's about the quest for what drives us. He was a kid. 22 years old. I thought the book was compelling and the movie was really well done. I look forward to viewing it again.” 10:22:55 AM 3/06/08 “We're all backpackers (well, some of us :^P) and like to think we're all dialed in when we head into the backcountry. - roseymonster Yeah you guys sure have mad backcountry skillz to survive on a groomed, blazed trail for a few days.” 10:29:01 AM 3/06/08 “Ha! I would say 50% of my trips are cross country...” 10:39:31 AM 3/06/08 “Don't be dissin' my high-tech extended picnic!” 10:40:21 AM 3/06/08 “Mutt - don't forget "with food brought in from the grocery store."” 10:40:47 AM 3/06/08 “I dehyrate my own squirrel and possum!” 10:47:03 AM 3/06/08 “Doesn't take too many skills to walk out to the middle of nowhere and die though.” 11:03:07 AM 3/06/08 “He lived out there for six months. Not too bad.” 11:08:16 AM 3/06/08 “I bet rosey could go at least seven. Anybody? Anybody?” 11:09:42 AM 3/06/08 “Ah, Sarge's combat survival training and his 22nd level ninja skills would keep him alive. He could talk a moose into suicide in about twenty seconds.” 11:11:30 AM 3/06/08 “Actually I do have combat survival training, and helped to teach it. That said, I wouldn't claim to be skilled in the least bit of wilderness survival, at least in a way that would be a comfortable living.” 11:14:22 AM 3/06/08 “ ”11:15:14 AM 3/06/08 “hmmmm, right winger, martial arts, combat hero.... could be!!!!! Although ”11:16:34 AM 3/06/08 “Anyhow, back to the subject matter. Does the movie differ from the book much?” 11:17:53 AM 3/06/08 “Why is martial arts funny to you? ... or the concept of somebody knowing it? Does it make your tummy giggle?” 11:17:59 AM 3/06/08 “Does the movie differ from the book much? - y2 Wow, that's an engaging question! Are you playing "adult" now? Did you raise one eyebrow when you asked that and light up a stogie?” 11:19:58 AM 3/06/08 “Anyhow, back to the subject matter. Does the movie differ from the book much? It covers the same ground pretty much. It does focus a lot more on his relationship with his parents. The movie really made them look bad.” 11:27:41 AM 3/06/08 “Sean Penn hates parents. parents = authority” 11:29:37 AM 3/06/08 “I haven't seen the movie, but the previews had him Kayaking on class 5 whitewater. The book he took a canoe down the lazy end of the Colorado River all the way to the Gulf of California. Not saying it wasn't something big time (more of his near death situations), but it wasn't white water rafting.” 11:31:11 AM 3/06/08 “That's what I got out of the movie hyway, in the movie they really blew up the danger levels of what the book described as being pretty tame. Of course, you should never compare books and movies, they rarely compliment each other.” 11:42:00 AM 3/06/08 “Oh what he was doing in the book was dangerous, just not in the Hollywood style of X-Games. His book deaths would have been less victorious but just as permanent.” 12:00:06 PM 3/06/08 “Attack of the Killer Tomatos.” 12:10:40 PM 3/06/08 “Sean Penn ruined this story. This movie is an example of how not to direct a film. The story jumped around so much it was hard to stay interested. The flash backs were ill-timed with no continuity. The random order of the cuts went from the end to the middle to the past to the beginning. Really poorly sliced together. I am not even going into detail on Penn's own nutjob politics he threw into the mix. What a disappointment. A good story ruined.” 1:45:15 PM 3/09/08 “Wow bacpac, we must have seen a different movie. I thought it was very well done. A very good study of the short adult life of him. The music was exceptional and the jumping around as you say was well put together. He did make alot of mistakes towards the end but also did alot right too and did manage to survive for 6 months alone. He had alot of courage for what he did.” 1:57:10 PM 3/09/08 “it wasn't that bad, bacpac...” 2:00:04 PM 3/09/08 “I think the book attempted to turn a magazine article into a novel. There was a lot in the book I didn't care about, it was otherwise, a well written story and I think John is a good writer. I thought the movie handled the story very well and I was quite happy with it. I really enjoyed it and it exceded my expectations. I think it was one of the few instances where the movie is better than the book. I think CM was a cool dude and I wish I could have met him and hiked with him. I agree, having a map would have made his situation much better and would have been more responsible. I think I have heard that the hunter that dropped him off, wanted to give him a map and he declined it. I also heard that there was a bridge a few miles down stream where he could have crossed and he would have known about it if he had the map. Anyway, it is tragic anytime anyone dies, especially someone young who was full of life and had much life left to live. last edited: 3/09/08 5:37:31 PM” 5:37:59 PM 3/09/08 “i could be misremembering, but i thought the book was jumpier than the movie. besides, its kinda normal for movies, especially biographical movies, to have flashbacks” 6:35:46 PM 3/09/08 “did the movie make any references to his "possible" ransacking of surrounding cabins?” 7:29:52 PM 3/09/08 “i dont think so.” 8:08:51 PM 3/09/08 “it wasn't that bad, bacpac... rocksee 2:00:04 PM 3/09/08 I think it was that bad. A real disappointment.” 3:21:44 AM 3/10/08
