SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. -- It was a ride that could have possibly been a woman's last. Deputies say Phillip Bass held a woman against her will. Authorities say it all began after Bass and a female whom he had a relationship with, were arguing in his red pick-up truck.

When the female asked to be let out, deputies say, Bass refused, and then tried to take her phone so she couldn't call for help. Scott Haines with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office says "She was in fear and lucky she was able to get that text message out."

Deputies say the woman was able to send a text message to her son, saying she was being held at gunpoint in the truck and she gave their location. Her son called authorities and told them the pair was driving on Quintette Road. Haines adds, "Deputies responded to that area, both our agency and the Escambia County Sheriff's Office and we were able to locate the pick up truck. We did a stop on the vehicle and were able to arrest the subject who was driving."

Deputies say Bass, a convicted felon, had been drinking and tried to claim his innocence. Haines says, "First of all the suspect was intoxicated that's why he was also charged with DUI. He denied any knowledge of a handgun, however there was a handgun located inside the vehicle."

That's when deputies say the suspect became unruly. Haines says, "Once he was taken into custody and placed in the back of the police car he was notified of the charges and what he was being arrested for. At that time he became irate and then he began kicking windows out of the police car and he was further restrained."

Uncontrollable and under the influence. Deputies say the female victim's quick thinking may have prevented her further trauma.

Bass was arrested and is being held on a $60,000 bond. He faces a list of charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.
