Nothin like winter backpacking! “Just got back from a weekend trip to Zaleski backpack trail. When I left from Columbus, the weather was turning from bad to worse but once I started the trek, there was no turning back. I saw over half a dozen spin outs in the two hour drive but I was in an AWD SUV so I wasn't too worried. I got to the trail late (4:00) as I had to work most of the day but the trail was pristine with newly fallen snow and it was clear that no one had been there for many days. Honestly...there is nothing more magical than a foot and a half of freshly fallen snow and a long, beautiful hike. I hiked until about 5:30 and then pulled off the trail to set up camp. My timing was perfect as I had about an hour to set the hammock (no more tents for this boy) up and make sure that my "cocoon" was ready. The snow was kind enough to stop and didn't start again until I was safely tucked away. I awoke to an additional 6 inches but was snug as a bug. The only problem was that the cover had blown off my boots and they were buried in and with a ton of snow. The hike out was as glorious as the hike in and after a slower trip home, I had great memories to add to my hiking resume.” 6:42:14 PM 3/09/08 “Zaleski is the type of place that if you're gonna get snow more is better! Glad you got home safe and sound; I heard there were 2,000 accidents in Ohio this weekend. I'm also glad the snow went south instead of north. =) Did you take a camera with you? I'd love to see some snowy pictures of that place.” 7:57:32 PM 3/09/08 “Absolutely. You can find them at http://www.thebackpacker.com/pictures/album/vrk86tne.php. Enjoy!!” 7:03:22 AM 3/10/08 “Cool, thanks!” 7:11:45 AM 3/10/08 “LOLz.. luv the winter cocoon.” 8:12:09 AM 3/10/08
