Grizzly Peak, 13427View Messages“Day hike up Grizzly Peak in CO Front Range. Started at Loveland Pass, 11990, traversed a couple of 12,900ish bumps, Cupid at 13,117 and finished at Grizzly Peak, 13,427 - little over 5 miles on the round trip. 9:48:36 PM 3/09/08 “Most excellent!” 9:51:23 PM 3/09/08 “thanks - twas a great day - couldn't have ordered up better weather if we'd called in ahead of time. THere was barely any wind - which has been very rare this winter most days it's been blowing a gale. I should have mentioned that our entire route traced the Continental Divide.” 9:55:58 PM 3/09/08 “It's nice when the mountains smile upon you. Great photos” 10:01:24 PM 3/09/08 “Thanks - it was a really fun outing.” 10:07:13 PM 3/09/08 “so, what are some of the best/most popular 13'ers in colorado?” 5:33:10 AM 3/10/08 “Cool! You hadn't told me that you saw the goats. I saw their tracks over ours so I knew that they had just come through. I really did enjoy this hike despite my outcome. I wound up sleeping in Georgetown for about an hour and half. Crash, there's a 13er sister site of the 14ers site I believe. There's a $hit-ton of 13ers too. And usually you don't see anybody on them. We only saw 2 people on this route besides us. Some of the 13ers can be really remote and just as grueling too! Check out mountains like Mt Alice, Mummy Mountain or Hagues. And Roam... I can't watch your panoramic video again or I'll go blind from the glare! And that area you'all traversed is the section that on Summit Post they say in boldface font. Don't attempt this route in the winter. :-) last edited: 3/10/08 6:01:20 AM” 6:00:44 AM 3/10/08 “do you have a favorite 13er, advee?” 6:03:25 AM 3/10/08 “I know - we scoped out the traverse area pretty carefully - it wasn't holding much snow at all, so we went for it. We could see grass and stuff coming thru the snow so we deemed it safe. :)” 6:09:43 AM 3/10/08 “Nice Pics Around! Climbing with Mr. A, you lucky dawg! Where are the pics of your troll? I bet he tried to f@ck those sheep!!!!” 7:13:55 AM 3/10/08 “I opted to delete the pics of the damn troll. He deserves no publicity from me.” 7:17:04 AM 3/10/08 “Hey crash - I've only done a couple of 13ers - but there are HUNDREDS - summitpost can give you a list of them - they are all way more secluded and much less traveled than any of the 14ers - they lack the noteriety. Hagues was great - a class three summit section - Grizzly was class two.... there's tons - some of the cool ones are also county high points (as is Hagues). Roach has a book for them, like he does the 14ers - he covers the top 100 i think... could be wrong on that.” 7:24:08 AM 3/10/08 Roam!! “Man what a life!! Must suck ta be you!! Great pics as always!! I might make it out there someday if I don't get ate a wild hog!! We'll be on the LBL this weekend. I hope to have a new camera on this trip. Do you have a recommendation? I don't wanna buy something real fancy that has all kind's of stuff I wouldn’t ever use. Just some thing that can take good pics and doesn’t need new batteries every two hours!! Weight is a concern as always. See ya later. Randall” 8:51:13 AM 3/10/08 “Hey Randall! Thanks. I beat the hell out of digital cameras - they last me about a year - the current one had duct tape holding the battery door shut. I always just buy the cheapest one on display at Best Buy knowing that it's got a short life ahead of it. This one is a Nikon ld-11 or somethign like that. It uses regular AA batteries and they last a reasonably long time - new ones will get thru a weekend trip no prob - even when cold. Thw software that came with it does a good job editing.” 10:22:06 AM 3/10/08 “Wow, looks like it was a great hike, Roam! It's always clear like that in CO, right?” 12:07:03 PM 3/10/08 “Sky blue is our state color!” 12:35:16 PM 3/10/08 “awesome pics Roam!!! Gotta get back to Colorado!” 2:16:04 PM 3/10/08 “Pretty pretty pictures. Bunch of comedians. ;) Catch me one of those goats? thx.” 2:27:04 PM 3/10/08 “great pics.” 2:45:10 PM 3/10/08 “i believe mr adventurist took a few pics as well. maybe he'll get his posted tonight. thanks yall - lemme know when you wanna come out Rob. ;) bring the missus and the little guy too.” 2:57:28 PM 3/10/08 “Grizzly Peak is the 302'nd highest mountain in Colorado. A complete (mostly at least) list of CO 13ers is here. (note there are about 4 mountains in CO named Grizzly Peak - in different ranges) last edited: 3/10/08 2:59:59 PM” 3:01:02 PM 3/10/08 “Excellential. Plain and simply excellential.” 3:28:25 PM 3/10/08 “Nice pics. Thanks for sharing.” 4:02:05 PM 3/10/08 “I hope to have the pics posted and edited by tomorrow morning.” 4:29:10 PM 3/10/08 “don't even think about going to bed until your done! ;)” 4:42:07 PM 3/10/08 “By the way, not sure if you mentioned but this hike was close to 5.5 miles round trip with 2,963' total elevation gained over the course of the hike. And Crash, this is my favorite 13er: http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/153020/mummy-mountain.html I've done it as a dayhike twice now. last edited: 3/10/08 5:46:49 PM” 5:48:05 PM 3/10/08 “with 2,963' total elevation gained you broke the 3000 foot rule! it doesnt count! :-P” 6:40:35 PM 3/10/08 “Here's my photos! I even added captions which is a rare occurrence. last edited: 3/10/08 6:48:50 PM” 6:50:01 PM 3/10/08 “Nice pictures, guys! Looks like it was a fantastic day. :)” 7:36:39 PM 3/10/08 This one is great John! “ i like the ones you took looking down the slopes - you get a feel of the steepness that you don't see on my shots that look up. last edited: 3/10/08 7:52:01 PM” 7:53:10 PM 3/10/08 “did you guys use crampons or snowshoes?” 8:13:22 PM 3/10/08 “neither. used an ice axe on the traverse of the snowfield and for going up and down grizzly's slope - more down than up. the snow was windloaded hard pack. I did posthole once or twice - and on one of those, i went DEEP - thought for sure i'd stepped thru the cornice! :) But, it was ok.” 8:26:42 PM 3/10/08 “if there had been a deeper layer of snow on Grizzly's slope crampons would have been required, as it was, it was just shy of absolutely needing them. they would have helped on the descent probably. actually, i think TMac put his on for his descent.” 8:40:10 PM 3/10/08 “Thanks! Good Ol' Dorf, he always seems to show.” 9:16:03 PM 3/10/08 “They don't call me "Posthole Pete" for nuthin! just ask Pennsy - he knows!” 9:51:59 PM 3/10/08 “I really appreciate you leading the way. It was great to have someone find the soft spots in the crust so we could all avoid them. Don't step there and there... and most definitely not there!” 5:23:18 AM 3/11/08 “Yea, I had crampons on for parts of the climb and the descent. They weren't absolutely necessary, but I'm far from surefooted. :) Here are some of my pics. No captions as usual, which will bite me in the rear when I'm older and more decrepit and can't remember what they are. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/562747764cQinKF” 5:34:41 AM 3/11/08 “Tim, you got some great pictures of some of the snowloads on the slopes. You need to start memorizing all your photo #s!” 6:08:32 AM 3/11/08 “nice shots!” 7:36:05 AM 3/11/08 “Crash, did you catch that Grizzly is on the same ridge as Grays & Torreys Peaks? This is my favorite trip report in a while.” 3:42:22 AM 3/12/08 “i noticed it was in the same area. didnt notice it was on the same ridge. if you wanna bag grizzly, go for it, itll be all i can do to nail grays, torreys is probably a pipe dream. i dont do well at altitude. but im not counting it out” 5:36:27 AM 3/12/08 “Torreys is 1.7 miles from the Grizzly summit - roughly a 650 foot drop and a 18680 foot gain over that 1.7 miles though. The Loveland Pass Trailhead is at 11,990. Summiting Torreys on this route would qualify you as a true Mountain Masochist. I think i might go back on Saturday... :)” 6:17:42 AM 3/12/08 “18 thousand!” 6:21:44 AM 3/12/08 “woopsie - it's really not 18,680. It's only about 1,860 or there-bouts. :) minor typo.” 7:34:30 AM 3/12/08 Here's Eddie's pics “Me & all my trolls got banned. Except this one. Don't forget hiking with artillery going off. The ski resort was using their howitzer to release the slabs.” 6:01:06 PM 3/12/08 My TR on Summitpost 7:40:28 PM 3/12/08 “Eddie's pictures came out great! I always enjoyed reading your TR on Summit Post. Nice writing!” 5:15:12 AM 3/13/08 “I wasn't suggesting summitting Grizzly from Stevens Gulch, just thought I'd point out that Roam & Adv were in the same mountains we'll be in this summer.” 8:29:52 PM 3/13/08 “youre not getting out of it that easily, pally. you HAVE to climb grizzly, now. you bring it up, you bag it ;-)” 9:04:00 PM 3/13/08
