Grizzly Peak, 13427

“Day hike up Grizzly Peak in CO Front Range.

Started at Loveland Pass, 11990, traversed a couple of 12,900ish bumps, Cupid at 13,117 and finished at Grizzly Peak, 13,427 - little over 5 miles on the round trip.

“thanks - twas a great day - couldn't have ordered up better weather if we'd called in ahead of time. THere was barely any wind - which has been very rare this winter most days it's been blowing a gale.

I should have mentioned that our entire route traced the Continental Divide.”

“Cool! You hadn't told me that you saw the goats. I saw their tracks over ours so I knew that they had just come through.

I really did enjoy this hike despite my outcome. I wound up sleeping in Georgetown for about an hour and half.

Crash, there's a 13er sister site of the 14ers site I believe. There's a $hit-ton of 13ers too. And usually you don't see anybody on them. We only saw 2 people on this route besides us.

Some of the 13ers can be really remote and just as grueling too!

Check out mountains like Mt Alice, Mummy Mountain or Hagues.

And Roam... I can't watch your panoramic video again or I'll go blind from the glare!

And that area you'all traversed is the section that on Summit Post they say in boldface font. Don't attempt this route in the winter. :-)

“I know - we scoped out the traverse area pretty carefully - it wasn't holding much snow at all, so we went for it. We could see grass and stuff coming thru the snow so we deemed it safe.

“Hey crash - I've only done a couple of 13ers - but there are HUNDREDS - summitpost can give you a list of them - they are all way more secluded and much less traveled than any of the 14ers - they lack the noteriety.

Hagues was great - a class three summit section - Grizzly was class two.... there's tons - some of the cool ones are also county high points (as is Hagues). Roach has a book for them, like he does the 14ers - he covers the top 100 i think... could be wrong on that.”

I might make it out there someday if I don't get ate a wild hog!! We'll be on the LBL this weekend. I hope to have a new camera on this trip. Do you have a recommendation? I don't wanna buy something real fancy that has all kind's of stuff I wouldn’t ever use. Just some thing that can take good pics and doesn’t need new batteries every two hours!! Weight is a concern as always.

I beat the hell out of digital cameras - they last me about a year - the current one had duct tape holding the battery door shut.

I always just buy the cheapest one on display at Best Buy knowing that it's got a short life ahead of it.

This one is a Nikon ld-11 or somethign like that. It uses regular AA batteries and they last a reasonably long time - new ones will get thru a weekend trip no prob - even when cold. Thw software that came with it does a good job editing.”

“Grizzly Peak is the 302'nd highest mountain in Colorado.

“By the way, not sure if you mentioned but this hike was close to 5.5 miles round trip with 2,963' total elevation gained over the course of the hike.

“neither. used an ice axe on the traverse of the snowfield and for going up and down grizzly's slope - more down than up.

the snow was windloaded hard pack.

I did posthole once or twice - and on one of those, i went DEEP - thought for sure i'd stepped thru the cornice! :) But, it was ok.”

“if there had been a deeper layer of snow on Grizzly's slope crampons would have been required, as it was, it was just shy of absolutely needing them. they would have helped on the descent probably.

“Yea, I had crampons on for parts of the climb and the descent. They weren't absolutely necessary, but I'm far from surefooted. :)

“Torreys is 1.7 miles from the Grizzly summit - roughly a 650 foot drop and a 18680 foot gain over that 1.7 miles though. The Loveland Pass Trailhead is at 11,990.

Summiting Torreys on this route would qualify you as a true Mountain Masochist.
