Hiker Falls To His Death At Red River Gorge
Marijuana Suspected In Hiker's Death

A hiker has fallen to his death at the Red River Gorge.

Emergency crews responded overnight to an area in the gorge near the Wolfe/Menifee County line.

Search and rescue crews spent about five hours overnight searching for 29-year-old Donnie Rogers of Irvine, before they recovered his body. Officials confirm that marijuana was found on his body.

It's believed he fell more than 200 feet to his death in the Chimney Rock area of the gorge.

Roger's body is being taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort. Preliminary autopsy results show that he died of blunt force trauma.

HHmmmm...it wasn't a falling buckeye this time...how unusual....

The gorge is well known for people imbibing their favorite whatever and falling off cliffs. I used to go there and get totally trashed on...well we won't go there...but I always remembered not to play around the cliffs thus I survived.

Being high on drugs and not knowing you are about to walk off a bluff in the dark, is terrible thing to happen. Just as it would be if you were not high on drugs, I feel the pain, its all the same.

I had a college buddy lost by leaning back from a seated position in the Shawngum Mtns in New Paltz NY the first year I was there (1978). They said he had done a quallude. They must've been sitting on an over look, he was afraid of heights so thus he sat facing the group looking out. Sad.

A Hi-Way to Die

Actually that was the title for a documentary about booze and drugs and driving....in the mid-70's.

That's one tricky place, especially with wet slick leaves everywhere. Too bad.

It's his fault in any case.

I learned of this from Jon, who heard it on the radio reports as he drove through Kentucky yesterday. What he heard was that the guy climbed the fence. His buddy who was with him told him to come back, but he refused. So his buddy said he had had enough and turned to leave. When he looked back behind him, the guy had disappeared, presumable fallen.

This is so unfortunate, but it could have been avoided quite easily.

fences are simply artificial restraints on our natural freedom to go any where we choose. To quote the the song.. "What gives you the right to put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in..." How dare anyone attempt to restrict movement and access by some dictatorial device.

People have the freedom to climb over fences designed to save lives, and plummet to their death. He exercised his right.

For those that have not been here there is a touron path and "observation area" for tourons to take photos from on top of this rock column. If one climbs over the split rail barrier there is next to no ledge to stand on. If one should choose to tempt fate in the middle of the night while being high this is one to die from. If you slip you will not get OH F##K! out of your mouth before you are in free fall.
