Affordable pack suggestions for a tall guy?
Hi all,

Husband is trying to find a good affordable pack that will fit his 22" torso length comfortably. We're considering both external and internal frame packs. I think he'd prefer an external frame pack, but he's OK with an internal frame pack if it isn't too expensive and if it adjusts well for his size. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Osprey packs tend to fit pretty well on a lot of people. Internal frame packs tend to be lighter and fit better on most.

Get to the nearest REI or some other store where you can try on a bunch of them with weight in them and talk to sales people who have been backpacking before (Academy and Sports Authority don't count).

The classic big guy pack is the external Kelty Tioga. It's archaic but some guys like them. My REI Mars size large is a great pack.

The Kelty Tioga is a workhorse beast. It is not for the ultralighter and the frame needs to be set up exactly right which is fussy but not difficult to do. It also rides better under load than half empty. If you pack it right you can put the contents of an entire RV home into it. I have used a tioga frame for years with a smaller knockoff version of the tioga pack. I love it, but I just can't control it any more with some health issues I am facing. So I have had to lighten my load. But I am not tall guy either.

If you decide to go with an external like the tioga try to get a metal frame and not the nylon/plastic composite piece of garbage Kelty uses on some of its packs. The metal fram provides a stiffness that is needed for the large load pack the plastics just can't match. A modern waist belt is a must.

Depending on what you call affordable, the Catalyst can be custom made to fit you.

It comes in a 90 liter size for 100 dollars that is definitely going to fit if this one doesn't, or if you just need more room.
