A yardarm (or 'yard') is one of those long cylindrical pieces of wood that holds up the sails on a square-rigged sailing ship.

The Sun is usually above the yardarm at about 10:00 in the morning..... which is Usually early enough for most anyone (unless you're Really hardcore).

A yard is a rope (there is never 'rope' on a boat, just a yard, a sheet or a painter) that is attached from one thing to a different thing (arm to sail), a sheet is attached on both ends, mast to mast, et c. a painter is a rope attached at one end only (waiting to moor).

The sun goes over the yardarm when it passes overhead, i.e. at noon.
