Realized last year's model during a purge at my local REI a few weeks ago. After store discounts the shelter set me back a cool 89 bucks.

Primary use will be for gear sledding; secondary use -- hiking with my younglings.

Couldn't pass it up and didn't have enough time to research the product to see if the thing is worth two rubbed pennies. Anyone use this thing? Any issues I need to be aware of?

Pretty please and thank yous in advance.

I have the QD 2 person, and my biggest issue with it is the fit of the poles. I've bent, repaired and bent again a pole trying to make it fit. Other than that (fixable by trimming the poles), its a sweet tent. Not sure if the 3 has similar issues, so feel free to disregard...

I have the quarter dome 1 man.... Haven't used it enough to render an opinion, however it was tough to give up my Kelty Clarke...

We have a Half Dome and it has been great. My guess is the UL 3 will be just fine.

We wanted something bigger but lighter and ended up with the Sierra Designs Baku 3...love it so far.

I don't know a thing about the UL3. Like Phil, I have the HalfDome and have zero complaints.

I have the UL2. Usually UL tents are over rated with regards to capacity. My UL2 is really an over sized 1 person tent. You might find the 3 to be more of a nice 2 man tent.

My poles are pretty taught but I never had to cut them. The trick is the flex them to where you suddenly get enough slack to slip it in the hole. The more you use it the easier it becomes.

The Perfect Dome-icile
REI QuaRter Dome UL : $219

There are lighter, sexier, smaller, and fancier two-person tents, but none that so effortlessly combine livability, compactness, and value as the Rei quarter Dome UL (www.rei.com). The three-season shelter weighs just four and a quarter pounds (1.9 kilograms)—split between two packs, that's just less than a full Nalgene bottle each—and it's blessed with dual side doors and vestibules, the remedy for those clumsy, honeymoon-ending 2 a.m. crawl-overs. Ventilation, which stinks in single-wall ultralights, is terrific in this two-waller; enormous mesh panels are pasted everywhere but the floor. And setup takes less than 60 seconds, thanks to color-coded poles and "dead end" pole sleeves. Then, of course, there's the price: You can't beat two bills for a decent ultralight tent.

This was in Adventure by National Geographic I have owned this tent for two years. I've used it in just about every type weather. I have yet to get wet or cold with this tent.

Great news, thanks again everyone. I was impressed with the weight of the shelter and with the boys still a little on the small side I think it should work out. Also, pretty soon Natureboy will be carrying his own weigh shelter so the UL will be for just me and Mr. Excitement.
