Phil is probably laughing hysterically at all of your dumb @sses for even trying this. :)

I wondered about you guys & the heat...a friend of mine from Harrisburg had called on Saturday after he ran a marathon and was whooped.

Glad everyone made it out safely!

WWBF's condensed trip report:

Early Friday AM, thunderstorm knocks out power at home
I leave late
Cortland and Ithaca... the road of a 1,000 traffic lights
Slowpokes to Elmira
Yea, a highway!
Highway ends
Traffic backed up at border
Yea, a highway again!
Rte 414: a road, or a paved trail?
Arrive at camp parking lot
Talk to fishermen
A group is walking toward the parking lot
They look crazy, must be them
Introductions
No car access to campsites
Haul everything in my sleeping bag
A man in a kilt, this must be the spot
1camper's killer tuna steak and shrimp
Sit around the fire
Obsessed about my supplies
The Connemara is soooo smooth
Early to bed
Early to rise
Start hiking at 4:30 am
Already hot
Them are some very steep hills
First person bails
I toast to Phil at first check point
The hills got steeper
Second person bails
I toast to Phil at second check point
It's hotter
Started to bonk
I'm all alone
A trail of stinging nettles
A bear!
I really bonked
It's hotter still
Damn bugs
Finally, the hard part is behind me
Third and forth people bail
I feel refreshed
A rattlesnake strike, but I'm too quick
Fifth person bails
Others on the trail are far behind
I hear someone is quite angry
I toast to Phil at third check point
It's downright oppressive
I continue on
Chowda decides to join me
A very pleasant trail
The Blackberry trail intersection
Need to take Deshea trail in about 1/2 mile
Did we pass the Deshea turnoff?
96*F
Getting hot spots on my feet
Why are ALL the trees blazed in blue?
Where is the Deshea turnoff?
Why are ALL the trees blazed in blue?
Where is the Deshea turnoff?
Why are ALL the trees blazed in blue?
Where is the Deshea turnoff?
Are we "accidentally" on Deshea?
There's the Deshea turnoff
Is this the Deshea turnoff?
That can't be the Deshea turnoff
Look here, this IS the Deshea turnoff
It can't be the Deshea turnoff
Why did 1/2 mile take 40 minutes?
Decision: 1/2 mile to Rte 44 bail-out, or continue?
Bail
The 1/2 mile to Rte 44 takes 2 minutes
I toast to Phil
Bugs are horrible
Let's walk down road to next checkpoint
Salvation in the form of a rescue vehicle
Back at camp
Beer
Relaxed in Pine Creek
Perfectly comfortable
Beer
NoGranola is quite fashionable
Changed clothes
1camper fears for his life
Why do I have a hangover?
Phil's ashes in Pine Creek
Eat JackStraw's delicious stir fry
Watch Spindle spin
Eat
Why are ALL the trees blazed in blue?
Sit by fire
Macallan 12 year scotch... mmmmm
Fall asleep in camp chair
Crawl into tent
Breakfast by the camp fire
Adios!
A great time had by all.
A special thanks to the support crew.

There was indeed scotch and as in October at Masten, I went home with half a bottle.

I drank some but it was the other men who were no help.
I tried, Phil!!

I pick THIS hike to be my first TT hike.
A great buch of people. Great hikers, great support, great weekend. I'll be back for more of this. Marko, sorry that I couldn't help more with the Scotch.
Thanks to PAR for all of the planning.

How did I forget these gems:

Chowda: "I couldn't let a Yankees fan best me"
I live in NY, but I'm a Red Sox fan
Aren't the Red Sox great?
Yes they are.

Macallans, it's what's for breakfast

To WWBF and the group:

Glad you had fun!

All the trees blazed in blue is usually a sign of a timber sale.

A section of PA 414 between Blackwell and Cedar Run was UNpaved until relatively recently (<10 yr ago). Go ahead NY folks, make fun of PA roads. We in PA will continue to make fun of the significantly higher NY gas and property taxes that support the better NY roads. :)

KiOeh -

Yeah... I figured it was for logging. Knowing the purpose didn't make it any easier trying to find a blue-blazed trail though! :-)

Also, I bet that Central New York can out-hick you Quakers anyday! We's got gravel roads in these here parts... and there's no such thing as a hunting SEASON in the local hills!

The PA DCNR has fewer roads open to auto travel per acre of State Forest but they are much better for sure I will admit. Then the DEC does better than more than a few towns too. I had an experience once in Tioga County NY where I had to be winched back all the way to where the "seasonal limited use highway" sign USED to be. :)

Purple? Where did you see purple?

Our roads are fine. You NY-ers drive like little old ladies, that's your problem. Spoiled with all that macadam all over.

We don't need no stinkin' pavin'. :p

Rte 414 has the creek on one side and rock cliffs on the other......them rocks.

The color of the rock is typical of Pennsylvania.
I have seen it in Ricketts Glen and other places.

What color would you say it is, Spindlette?
Mauve?
MarkO

If they was purple spindlette would have them as part of her gear kit. Therefore... they can not be purple.

Seriously. I'd pick up purple rocks.

I don't think they are Man Pink either. In the hazy tropical air I guess they looked a little off color. Most of the rock there is greyish. Grey-blue, grey-green, grey-grey, grey-brown.

It was the haze MarkO. Blame the haze, and Macallans. ;)

The geology of Pine Creek Gorge. The sandstone is probably your purple. I can see that. It's pretty.

Ahhh, Pancakes...
The pancakes and bacon drenched in syrup made my hike...I'm in love. Spindlette - will you marry me?

Thanks everyone for the support during this ridiculous but fun adventure. Thanks WWBF for stopping when we got semi-logistically challenged. It would have really hurt, but I wasn't going to stop and let a New Yorker show up us Bostoners. Thanks Crazy for hooking me up with a tent and bag - people already looked at me funny when I dragged my gnarly duffle through the Four Seasons Hotel in Philly (business trip).

Can't wait to head back and make the BFT our #&%!$ - a hard but beautiful trail. It was really great to meet some of you and I'm looking forward to hiking with you again soon.

Chowdahead honey, I had a really great time, and I like you very much, but it was just breakfast. I didn't intend it to mean, well, you know.

You're half my age sugar. Do you know how harsh the girlfriends would talk behind my back once they got done high-fiveing me and asking for details about your, ummm, gear closet?

Next time you're here maybe we can go for brunch..in public..during daylight hours. Then kick some more trail behind! ;)
