“I couldnt figure out how to link an existing thread with the trip, so I started this one.

Anyway - Sign up !! Remember the Bearmagnet!
Show up even if you dont hike! It will still be a mass gathering of great people for a great reason.”

“The trip is still on with many of the original details still in place, but we are still open to suggestions to make it better. June 7 early morning start and hopefully everyone will finish the entire 42.44 mile loop in one day. It just seems we lost the sign ups in the transition, so please sign on to the "new" trip.

I did a short loop from Slate Run Road to Old Mountain Road and back yesterday. A breathtaking climb to a breathtaking view! That pretty much describes the entire trail. Let's get all the previous participants and lots more signed up.”

“I found myself unable to continue in the position of support chair for a variety of reasons. The nature and intent of the hike seemed to evolve making the system I was setting up seem cumbersome and unweidly. I have remained in touch with people if I can be of assistance but I am no longer actively part of the planning team.”

“Don't feel bad you're behind on the news, meangreen. The only important thing is we are moving forward. CrazyPace is leading the hike. I am fully on board with communications and other support details and am also doing the negotiations with Bureau of Forestry. The fundraising aspect is the one thing that appears to have been lost with no clear leader stepping forward to volunteer.”

“The fundraiser part can be as simple as passing around a hat and donate everything to the American Cancer Society. The hike itself is to be a tribute to Phil. His wife Dani wanted nothing but us to remember him on the trails. This is a gathering to honor him for what he was to TT by TT'ers and anybody else who wants to help out or hike.

“Only SEVEN weeks away from the hike. This will be a great tribute to Bearmagnet. It would be nice to get a few more willing and capable of trying the entire 43 miles, but even if you only want to do a part of it or help with support please sign up. I have campsites at Black Walnut Bottom but I need to know how many people we are going to have. The hike is only part of the tribute. The gathering and story telling will also be worth the trip.”

“A large wildfire on Cedar Mountain currently has Rt. 414 closed down between Slate Run and the Tioga County line, which is between Rattlesnake Rock and Blackwell. Officially it may be closed for several days, but there is a possibility it may be opened later today.

“I just linked the campground pics to the hike in the last couple days, but the description has been on the planning thread for a while.

By my count we have just 6 attempting the entire trail with me being a slight maybe. I proved to myself this past weekend just how little time I have been able to commit to training this spring.

I believe we also have somewhere between 6 and 10 support people including some non-forum definites and maybes I have rounded up. We need to pin down the maybes in the next couple weeks and also continue to encourage anyone else to join in the tribute regardless of how far they are willing to hike. I am told this camping area normally fills up on summer weekends so it will become difficult or impossible to add sites the closer it gets to the date.”

“PAR, I just saw a note that the fire was on 3,271 acres - news reports online seem pretty vague but mention the fire starting in Bull Run which is one hollow SW of West Rim Trail - did the fire come over to the WRT area or on the other side of Pine Creek, or way back in to the northwest??”

kioeh, the fire started just off Rt 414 NE of the Narrows and headed north as far as Mine Hole Road. The fire area is most of the area bounded by Rt. 414, Fahnestock Road, Mine Hole Road, and West Rim Road. District Forester's estimate as of yesterday morning was 3816 acres which is huge for Pennsylvania. There are still hot spots inside the line. Some forestry roads remain closed, as well as the West Rim Trail from Rattlesnake Rock north to West Rim Road is officially closed until the fire is declared 100% controlled.”

I had thought about spending the day/night/day SaturdaySunday just north of Rattlesnake Rocks. Guess I am glad I didn't”

“I may be backing out. Tendonitis in my achilles and a crazy workload have severely limited my training. Hiked 18.5 mi (4,500' vertical) this past Saturday, and my calves were cramping the last 4 miles. If I can hit the trails hard the next couple of weekends, I may be back on track. I'll keep you guys informed.”

Seriously, I can relate to the issues of work and personal demands severely the limiting training time. It affected my performance at Hyner a couple weeks ago when I didn’t do as good as I had hoped, but I also saw several runners far better than I fall victim to severe cramps and other issues. There are a tremendous number of factors that all work together to influence what your performance is on any particular day.

The main thing to keep in mind with this hike is what the big picture purpose of it is. There is no big posting of times and mileage planned. No shirts, medals or belt buckles. It’s not sanctioned by anyone so it can’t be used as a qualifier for some other event. Yes, I understand the bragging rights and personal pride in finishing such a major challenge, but even if you don’t think you are ready to finish it this time at least consider still showing up to enjoy the camaraderie, the scenery, the camping fun and a more modest hike. You have far loftier goals than this one-day hike and you can just chalk this one up as another training day. As much as I would like to try the BFT in a day, I know what it felt like to do 30 miles of the West Rim Trail on Monday – with far less elevation – and I know that for me, I’m making the right decision to stick to the support side this June.

Nice? HOT yes! But can she hike?”

“My training has been suckish at best. I cracked a rib about a month ago and popped a knee the other day but I still feel OK. I don't know if I can make the whole distance but I'm still on. Work has been way to busy to train properly so I'll be looking for a slow poke to team up with. I think I might bring a hammock just in case.... less than a month”
