Bottom line: magazines about backpacking are generally boring for me these days. I haven't subscribed to this mag in about eight years. I was into it when I was getting back into gear and updating my stuff. Now that I have too much stuff, I don't really care about reading them anymore. Some of the tips can be helpful, but the majority I already know or don't find what they are revealing to be very useful. Sure, the trip sections are kinda beneficial because I learn about different trails and locales that I want to visit. I ripped these outta the old mags and saved them. Part of me also revolts against these trip descriptions (but I guess you gotta have it in a mag) because I think you should have to work to find those areas, not have some overpriced mag tell you where they are.

Keep the dopes out!

I like Backpacker magazine....although I haven't bought one in about 4 years. I still read/scan a few articles when visiting a magazine rack. It's the mag that started me in backpacking.

To be fair....at one time I was buying 8 to 10 different magazines on different activities per month....which costed me more than $60.00/month....I've dropped them all.

actually, I think its that freak stratusloop, or whatever he was calling himself when matt outed him an all his trolls just before demand media took over. This slime has the exact same feel, the dude, the acting like he knows stuff that you can't figure out, the arrogance, not to mention a flurry of other hateful trolls.

Who was it that was going to meet him personnally and kick the stuffing out of him?

Echoing what rosey said, I used to read it too when I was hungry for information, but it just turned to crap in recent years. Like I said in the first post, what that story was doing in a backpacking magazine is beyond me. I have yet to hear someone give me a good reason.

I openned up the April 2008 of Backpacker Magazine at random, and on page 48 at the bottom, it read their advice "Bear sprays exceed the 4-fluid-once limit established by the TSA for self-defense sprays in checked luggage. Ship it ahead of time, or buy it at your destination"

These guys are journalist, not backpackers.

First, Bear Sprays are not self-defense sprays. Bear Sprays cannot go on any airplanes, checked, carry on, or in any size. If you tried, you would most likely end up in custody.

Second, carriers like Fed-Ex and UPS will NOT ship Bear Spray for ordinary individuals. For over a year, the Postal Service will not allow ordinary customers who do not have special licenses to ship Bear Spray.

These guys are not Backpackers or Backpacker enthusiasts. They don't even read the threads that would have told them the rules on Bear Sprays. They obviously have never shipped Bear Spray to their destinations.

Glad to see everyone's talking it up and getting outside.

Hope to be heading out for a few days in the next two weeks...adios.
