Charlies Bunyon

“Over the years I've seen alot of the Smokies but have overlooked this portion of the AT until today.Govmentmule and I set out this morning to do a 14 mile loop in the Cataloochie area but a downpoor and a later than anticipated start we changed our minds and were going to hike near Clingmans Dome only find the area won't reopen until Tuesday.Thats when we decided to take the AT over to Charlies Bunyon and I'm so glad that we did.It was very foggy but a great 8 mile dayhike.”

“Was there water flowing from the pipe at Ice Water Spring?”

“The Bunyon was one of my first backpacking trips in the 1970s.
The bunks at Icewater were made of chicken wire, then.”

“I have lots of memories of that area from my hike in 2006. When I went through there it was so cold that our food bags hanging on the bear cables were frozen and we had a hard time getting them down. There was snow all over the place and the trail was nothing but ice. I remember getting to Charlie's Bunyon and taking a nice break. It was cold but the skies were clear and we had perfect views. I aim to go back there soon.”

“Yes Chili the water was flowing very well at Icewater as well as everywhere else.

Stovie the bunks are all wooden now...it's a very nice shelter.Looks like firewood is very scarce tho!”

“It is a scavenger hunt to find a piece of fire wood at any of the shelters. After we built a fire in the shelter at Silars a couple years ago, I don't trust the fireplaces anymore. The chimney must have been stopped up, because it looked like an opium den in there after about 10 minutes.”
