Damn.... this weekend was incredible.... and now we're getting nailed with 12 inches. You can read into that all you want.

Here are some pics from our hike if you care.... just thought I'd share :)

Cool, thanks for sharing.
So where is this at?

Any clue what the gouges in that tree were from?

Nice!

The snow was compacted enough to walk on? No snowshoes?

I suspect the holes in the trees were from woodpeckers.

Pics are all from the Marquette, Michigan area. Snowshoes were not needed as long as you stayed on the hardpacked trail. Going off trail... you would find yourself in 2-3 feet of snow. In certain spots on Hogsback the snow was mostly gone from exposure to the sun. Great hike, weather was wonderful.

Gouges are from woodpeckers.

Huh ok. I asked cause the holes just seemed bigger than what I've seen woodpeckers do around here.

Thanks for the info.

There's a dirty joke in there somewhere.

There's a dirty joke everywhere if you are twisted enough to find it.
I try my best but I'm just one guy.

Those pictures are spectacular but it looks far too cold to be hiking.....

I'm sorry but you'll have to be held back and take the class over next year.

I shot a pileated with my .410 when I was a kid. It was very shortly afterward that I learned of the by-then extinct ivory bill. I went for years believing I had killed the last ivory bill, but kept the secret to myself. I finally found about pileateds.

Maybe I can make up for the murder of an innocent pileated by discovering a living ivory bill in the bottomlands of the Altamaha River basin...

Yeah we did a lot dumb things when we were kids, me included for sure. I/we now know that most birds are protected, other than game birds and I now have no desire to shoot anything. Still love to fish though.
