Racism is alive and well in America toda y.View Messages“(CNN) -- An Atlanta, Georgia, judge who ordered white lawyers out of his courtroom so he could lecture African-American defendants called that decision a "mistake" Tuesday night. Judge Marvin Arrington says he is fed up with the defendants he keeps seeing in his courtroom. "In retrospect, it was a mistake," Judge Marvin Arrington told CNN. "Because my sheriff said to me, 'Judge, that message should be given to everybody' -- 'Don't violate the law, make something out of yourself, go to school, find a role model, somebody that will help you advance your life.'" Arrington, who is African-American, is a judge in Fulton County, Georgia, which includes the city of Atlanta. He said he got fed up seeing a parade of young black defendants shuffle into his courtroom and decided to address them one day last week -- out of the earshot of white lawyers. "I came out and saw the defendants, and it was about 99.9 percent Afro-Americans," Arrington told CNN affiliate WSB-TV of Atlanta, "and at some point in time, I excused some lawyers -- most of them white -- and said to the young people in here, 'What in the world are you doing with your lives?'" The judge thought his message would make a greater impact if he delivered it to a black-only audience, he said. Watch judge talk about decision to lecture black defendants » "I didn't want them to think I was talking down to them; trying to embarrass them or insult them; be derogatory toward them, and I was just saying, 'Please get yourself together,'" Arrington said. In his Tuesday night appearance on CNN, Arrington told Anderson Cooper that that seeing the same faces walk in and out of his courtroom year after year takes its toll. "I ask them all the the time, 'What progress are we making with you?' And sometime they cannot answer," he said. He said he would open his court doors to everyone on Thursday and "I am going to give the same identical speech: 'You've got to do better.'"” 7:11:40 AM 4/02/08 “i suppose youre insinuating that the black judge is an anti-white racist?” 7:16:20 AM 4/02/08 “hey crash...i was wondering if you got the axe by the mighty elise...glad to see you're still alive ...you cracker” 7:18:42 AM 4/02/08 “Uh, yeah Crash, I am. Any time you exclude someone based on their skin color or race, you are a racist. It's pretty simple.” 7:19:15 AM 4/02/08 “Crash Bang shows off his awesome analytic skills.” 7:19:48 AM 4/02/08 “I excused some lawyers -- most of them white RIF no, he excluded them because they were lawyers.” 7:21:28 AM 4/02/08 “jesus. some ppl just LOOK for excuses to call blacks racists. why is that?” 7:22:34 AM 4/02/08 “Uh, yeah Crash, I am. Any time you exclude someone based on their skin color or race, you are a racist. It's pretty simple.” squirrelbait 10:19:15 AM 4/02/08 umm, not to split hairs here but that would make them prejudice or biased...racist would have to include an expressed hatred of a particular race” 7:23:23 AM 4/02/08 “i see this as more of a "keeping it in the family" kind of thing sometimes, its better to dress your kid down at home rather than at the mall he wanted to give them a piece of his mind, but thought maybe it might be too humiliating in front of the white lawyers” 7:25:54 AM 4/02/08 “I have to back crash on this one. This is exactly the message that most intelligent people think should be delivered to the black youth of America. So he sent the white lawyers out. I doubt those black kids gave much of a damn about the message, but whatever they did take from it is more than they would have if they thought they were being shamed in front of a bunch or rich white men.” 7:25:56 AM 4/02/08 “hyway nailed it” 7:27:00 AM 4/02/08 “Segregated Churchs and courts dance rite in time with dynamic tax codes and thieving banker welfare.” 7:27:07 AM 4/02/08 “i agree...even though these lawyers were there to defend them the defendants probably still saw them as "da man"...by removing them the judge was able to talk to them one on one and they would get the since that he was being sincere and not just putting on a show” 7:27:59 AM 4/02/08 “No thrifty, that is not racism. Here is one definition of racism; WordNet - Cite This Source - Share This racist adjective 1. based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks" 2. discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion noun 1. a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others WordNet® 3.0, © 2006 by Princeton University. No where is hate mentioned. That is a common misconception. And Crash, I do not look for excuses to find a black racist. I put that story up because of the fact that there is a culture of accepted racism in this country. Anything against whitey is ok, but you better leave the blacks, the yellows, the browns and the reds out of it. I hate racism in all forms but what I hate most is racism that is allowed to exist. I hate racism that is fostered by the government. This is an example of that.” 7:29:49 AM 4/02/08 “sb. go back and re-read hyway's initial post.” 7:31:51 AM 4/02/08 “i can use the internets too...from dictionary.com: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/racist rac·ism –noun 1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.” 7:32:33 AM 4/02/08 “there is a REASON they were sent out of the room. he didnt want the defendants to feel like they were being shamed in front of a bunch of rich white men” 7:33:52 AM 4/02/08 “Oh My God. REALLY? Keeping it in the family?? Whose family?? They were not all related!! The only thing they had in common was skin color!! Therefore the judge decided that the "family" he was keeping it in excluded whites. Or other races if they were lawyers. We don't have that information. The facts are he excluded whites from an all black gathering. What would the reaction be if a white judge excluded all blacks and minorities? Give me a freaking break! What he did was wrong on many levels. The judge, supposedly educated, taught those repeat offenders and other criminals that it is ok to exclude people fbecause of their skin color. Why couldn't he have sent that message to ALL people? It applies to everyone. This will get swept under the carpet and will go away. If a white guy did it he would be dragged through the mud and his career would be over. Anyone here remember what happened to the white guy who used the word niggardly?” 7:35:07 AM 4/02/08 “Whose family?? They were not all related!! The only thing they had in common was skin color!! not to sound like a bumper sticker here but skin color goes deeper than skin deep...it's the same reason why black guidance consolers are more successful in black areas and black cops are more respected in black neighborhoods...it has less to do with skin color and more to do with understanding the "black experience"” 7:40:51 AM 4/02/08 “keeping it in the family?? Whose family?? They were not all related!! The only thing they had in common was skin color!! while youve got yer handy little online dictionary there, look up "analogy" in it The facts are he excluded whites from an all black gathering why would they want to be a part of it? theyre not the ones fcking up their lives gang-banging and whatnot What would the reaction be if a white judge excluded all blacks and minorities? pointless question. white kids arent the ones getting into trouble in disproportionate numbers.” 7:41:14 AM 4/02/08 “wheres nigal to tell me im not allowed to post on this thread?” 7:42:28 AM 4/02/08 “He said he got fed up seeing a parade of young black defendants shuffle into his courtroom and decided to address them one day last week -- out of the earshot of white lawyers. "I came out and saw the defendants, and it was about 99.9 percent Afro-Americans," Arrington told CNN affiliate WSB-TV of Atlanta, "and at some point in time, I excused some lawyers -- most of them white -- and said to the young people in here, 'What in the world are you doing with your lives?'" Racism is absolute. The Judge "excused some lawyers -- most of them white" Most is not ALL. Defendants "99.9 percent Afro-Americans" again not all. But he did say "of white lawyers" that statement does indicate bias, no hatred just prejudice. He does not want them to hear what he has to say based on skin color.” 7:42:44 AM 4/02/08 “so exactly how were there 99.9 percent african americans, I wanna know. cuz even if theres 100 defendants in that room, somebodys stil 9/10ths black. how did he know about the other 10 percent?” 7:48:21 AM 4/02/08 “crash, i would assume that nigals comments are about not being able to fully understand, and thus not being able to offer an informed opinion, unless you have actually experienced it...which would also apply to SB, myself and anyone else here who hasn't experienced racism or prejudice” 7:48:38 AM 4/02/08 “64% of the world's statistics are made up right there on the spot 82.4% of people believe them whether they're accurate statistics or not I don't know what you believe, but I do know there's no doubt I need another double shot of something 90 proof, I got too much to think about Too much to think about, too much to figure out Stuck between hope and doubt, it's too much to think about They say 92% of everything you learned in school is just bull#&%!$ you'll never need 84% of everything you got you bought to satisfy your greed Because 90% of the world's population links possessions to sucess Even though 80% of the wealthiest 1% of the population drinks to an alarming excess More money, more stress Too much to think about, too much to figure out Stuck between hope and doubt, it's too much to think about 84% of all statisticians truly hate their jobs They say the average bank robber lives within, say, about 20 miles of the back that he robs There's a little bank not far from here I've been watching now awhile Lately all I can think about's How bad I want to go out in style It's too much to think about, it's too much to figure out Stuck between hope and doubt, it's too much to think about That's right It's too much to think about Amen It's too much to think about Um-hmm” 7:56:29 AM 4/02/08 “wheres nigal to tell me im not allowed to post on this thread?” crash bang 8:42:28 AM 4/02/08 Crash is a sick, racist, phuktard and should be banned for life just for posting to this thread. (How's that, buddy? LOL!)” 7:57:11 AM 4/02/08 “easy CJ...this is the "new" tt...you could get banned for that” 8:00:49 AM 4/02/08 “Gee thrifty, such an informed decision. Thank you for pointing out that I have never experienced racism. Do you know what color my skin is? Do you know me? You don't, you just assume I am white. I am not, I am Native American. While most people call people from Africa Spear Chuckers, try living through the 70's and 80's when Natives were allowed to spear 100% of the allowable catch out of certain Wisconsin and Minnesota lakes and NOT be called a Spear Chucker by angry white fishermen. Nimblefoot might remember those days, not often reported in the news. I remember going to the lake with my Grandparents and having our way blocked by white fisherman who wouldn't let us onto the water. Or having the tires slashed on the boat trailer and truck. Or having a good friend lose his boat because he looked Native even though he was from Italian parents. The nice white people who have never discriminated against me or people I know loosened the lugnuts on his boat trailer tire so that the tire came off when he was doing about 40mph. Oh I know, how about going out with my dad and being escorted by sherriff's deputies through the crowds of protesters so we could just go fishing. I have been discriminated against because of my skin color thrifty so don't lump me in with the whitey just out to get the minorities. last edited: 4/02/08 8:27:12 AM” 8:25:53 AM 4/02/08 “ok, youve felt the boot of "da man" youre still wrong about this issue” 8:30:43 AM 4/02/08 “easy killer...just making fare assumptions...maybe you should lead off with that” 8:40:47 AM 4/02/08 “We will have to agree to disagree then Crash, which is unfortunate. The judge excluded people from his courtroom based on skin color, promoting a division of races that is negatively affecting this country. He is wrong, but will probably get away with it.” 8:41:16 AM 4/02/08 “The judge excluded people from his courtroom based on skin color oversimplification” 8:42:54 AM 4/02/08 “An Atlanta, Georgia, judge who ordered white lawyers out of his courtroom so he could lecture African-American defendants called that decision a "mistake" Tuesday night. That's from the first line in the story, published by CNN. Where did I oversimplify? He said he got fed up seeing a parade of young black defendants shuffle into his courtroom and decided to address them one day last week -- out of the earshot of white lawyers. That is the fourth line of the story, again pointing out he excluded whites. Again, where did I oversimplify? last edited: 4/02/08 8:48:09 AM” 8:46:41 AM 4/02/08 “your analyis of the judge's motive is an oversimplification of the facts sidebar: a little ironic that the word oversimplification is kinda complicated to spell” 8:50:22 AM 4/02/08 “the wording is wrong...he didn't send them out "because they were white"...he sent them out because he didn't want the defendants to think he was belittling them last edited: 4/02/08 8:51:26 AM” 8:50:47 AM 4/02/08 “youre also conveniently ignoring the fact that not all of the lawyers were white” 8:51:29 AM 4/02/08 “you're insinuating that he doesn't like white people when what he actually was doing was wanting to talk black man to black man...i don't see anything wrong with that...it's not like he was denying them the right to represent the defendants” 8:56:07 AM 4/02/08 “So using your logic, thrifty and crash, it would be ok, and accepted across the country as ok, for a white judge to remove everyone but white people from the courtroom just to have a white man to white man chat with them?” 9:04:11 AM 4/02/08 “if white men were getting into trouble with the law in disproportionately high numbers, sure it would” 9:08:18 AM 4/02/08 “It would be in my little red neck town, yes” 9:11:22 AM 4/02/08 “if it was relevant (like in this case) yes allow me to use your example and let me be clear, i mean no disrespect by this...there is a problem with alcohol abuse, diabetes and other health issues among native americans...does this not bother you?...do you not have the desire to improve these things in the native american community?...the same applies here...a black judge is tired of the crime rate in the black community...again, it's not like he made any judiciary decisions based on race and he didn't exclude the lawyers during the trial just during the lecture” 9:12:15 AM 4/02/08 “I call bullchit. There is no way in hell a white person would get away with it and you can all come out of your delusional caves and admit it. A council member used the word niggardly in a sentence, not even close to speaking about blacks and he was removed from his position. There is no way in this country, even if there were no minorities present in the courtroom, or even the entire county, that a white judge could say he wanted everyone but the white people to leave the room and get away with it. No possible way. I am done writing on this topic because some people just aren't being truthful in their interpretation of the circumstances. Or those same people are so out of touch with racism in America that they refuse to see the real truth. And to answer thrifty, yes those issues bother me, but let's look at it another way. All of those issues you stated are across the board issues that whites blacks and indians have issues with, so lets educate EVERYBODY and not leave anyone out. last edited: 4/02/08 9:17:51 AM” 9:15:48 AM 4/02/08 “ok, so you dont have a real rebuttal, youre just going to call everyone that disagrees with you a liar. nice” 9:17:29 AM 4/02/08 “here is no way in this country, even if there were no minorities present in the courtroom, or even the entire county, that a white judge could say he wanted everyone but the white people to leave the room and get away with it now this is a funny sentence. if there were no minorities present, how could he ask them to leave? dude, youre starting to confuse yourself” 9:22:20 AM 4/02/08 “A council member used the word niggardly in a sentence, not even close to speaking about blacks and he was removed from his position. i'm not familier with this story but i can't think of any situation were it would be ok to use that term but let's look at it another way. All of those issues you stated are across the board issues that whites blacks and indians have issues with right, but not a the levels native americans do i can tell by your responses that you're letting your emotions get involved...i think we should just do as your previous post suggested and just agree to disagree” 9:33:40 AM 4/02/08 “let me approach it a different way...how were the lawyers harmed by being asked to leave?...what did they loose?” 9:53:18 AM 4/02/08 “...and stovie, can we please not get that started?...i'm not one of those who thinks racism against whites doesn't happen or isn't posible, i just don't think this is an example of it...and i'm definately not "liberal" or "pc"” 9:57:38 AM 4/02/08 “The judge does work for the people ,the whole people and nothing but the people, so help me Clinton?” 9:59:25 AM 4/02/08 “Truth To Power” 9:59:51 AM 4/02/08 “Niggardly means cheap or stingy and there is no racial component, implication or tie in to the racial slur other than they sound similar.” 10:18:53 AM 4/02/08
