Yorktown battlefield... They have a 9 and or 12 mile hike

not real difficult, but you don't get many hills out that way..

also, you can just hike around williamsburg and jamestowne.. its really neat....

if you have time, stop in at the Grean Leaf Deli (across from Willian and Mary) or Chownings Tavern (in colonial W'burg)...

I usually get down there 4 or 5 times a year..

fool - We'll be walking around williamsburg and possibly jamestown as part of our trip. I'll try to check out the Deli and Tavern you mentioned. The hike is in case we have free time. We're also hitting Busch Gardens. Thanks again.

I lived in Gloucester County (next door) for fifteen years and retired at the Coast Guard Training Center which is in the Yorktown battlefield. I could be wrong, but I think those "trails" are blacktopped. Still, it's as close to a hike as you'll get right there.

Across the York River (east on Hwy 17), there's Beaver Dam Park in the Courthouse area of Gloucester County. There are about 10 miles of gently sloping trails in the park, going along the edge of the water and over a few small hills.

Colonial Williamsburg is a must see, in my opinion. I did some part time landscaping work there shortly after retiring. I ended up with tons of retired perenniels for my own place. A nice little gig.

Sarge, be sure to check out the Clydesdale horses at Busch Gardens. There might even be a foal around this time of year. There's nothing cuter than a baby Clydesdale!

I've never really done any hikes down there, but I have visted many times. Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown Settlement are very interesting. I especially enjoyed the archeological dig and the ships.

The Jamestown Settlement is nice, but if you like History, then go to Jamestown NP.. It isn't as exciting for the kids but it is interesting.

As for the Yorktown hike, nimblefoot there is a lot of it along roads in the park. I had forgotten about that because we went a few years ago in February, and it snowed before and as we were hiking. It made the battlefield look awesome.

I did a lot of running when stationed there and the Battlefields are among my all time favorite places to run. I seldom took the roads, preferring to run through the fields and up and down the redoubts.

The Park Service provides guided tours and on a particularly sunny day, I was running full bore, straight up a redoubt and into the middle of a bunch of visitors on tour. Without missing a beat I hollered, "The British are coming; The British are coming" and continued down the other side without breaking stride.

That was you?!?!?!?! The tour guide turned to us and said, that poor fellow doesn't know it, but he's running toward the British Army!!!

LOL fool. I can imagine a witty guide say exactly that. A good guide is a treasure, someone just doing a job, not so much.
