So I went on a little day hike scouting out a new place to ride my mountain bike. It was a little soupy out here for the bike so today I hoofed it.

The place I went is about twenty minutes from my house and the hike I chose to do is featured on the othersides website. A little over five miles today, there are probably 50 miles of trails or more in this Forest Preserve area.

The trail was a sloppy mess for the most part and there wasn't much elevation gain or loss early on. It then opened up into Oak Savannah and became quite lovely. Reminded me of southern Illinois a little, going up and down crossing creeks. There was still the sound of traffic faintly in the distance in spite of the pretty surroundings though.

This little guy was right in the path so we moved him off to the side after taking a pic of him.

The Oak Savannah gave way to more tangled brush as we approached the top of the ridge once again. There are what are called sloughs all around this area. There is water out there but the mud would probably swallow you up before you reach it.

Around this time we started seeing these things around, they all had locks except this one.

Whats inside?

Then the real point of this exercise came into view.

Here is the inscription on the rock above.

If the inscription doesn't make clear to you the historical significance of this site, Google The Manhattan Project.

Oh, that's really cool CLR. I bet the equipment in those green tubes were monitor/ recorders for radiation, possibly even to monitor the ground water for radioactivity too.

Well I'm not uptight
Not unattracted
Turn me on tonight
Cause I'm radioactive
Radioactive

There's not a fight
And I'm not your captive
Turn me loose tonight
Cause I'm radioactive
Radioactive

I want to stay with you
I want to play with you baby
I want to lay with you
And I want you to know

Got to concentrate
don't be distractive
Turn me on tonight
Cause I'm radioactive
Radioactive
Radioactive
Radioactive

I want to stay with you
I don't want to play with you
I want just to lay with you
And I want you to know

Got to concentrate
don't be distractive
Turn me on tonight
Cause I'm radioactive oh yeah
Oh yeah radioactive
Don't you stand, stand too close
You might catch it

You can buy Geiger counters at wwwsportsmansguide.com fairly reasonably.

I didn't glow, no spidey powers, didn't turn into the Hulk either :)

Geiger counters/dosimeters are pretty reasonably priced! Who would a thunk it?

My buddy and I were talking about that salamander? That would be a sign of a healthy ecosystem wouldn't it? It was downstream of the site which is on a ridge.
