camping “does anybody know of a good place to camp in the Shawangunk Mts.” 3:48:19 PM 4/04/08 “are YOU refering to SAM'S POINT ?” 4:08:15 PM 4/04/08 “This county was formed Nov. 1, 1683 [1] ,and included the country between the Hudson and the Delaware, bounded north and S by due E. and W. lines passing through the mouths of Sawyers and Murderers Creeks. A part of Delaware was taken off in 1797, a part of Greene in 1800, and Sullivan in 1809. A portion was annexed to Orange in 1798, and the town of Catskill was annexed from Albany co. the same year. It lies on the W. bank of the Hudson, centrally distant 68 mi. from Albany, and contains 1,204 sq. mi. Its surface is mostly a hilly and mountainous upland. The Catskill Mts. occupy the northwest part; and the Shawangunk Mts. extend northeast from the southwest corner nearly through the co. The mountain region consists of irregular ridges and isolated peaks with rocky sides and summits too steep and rough for cultivation. The summits are 1,500 to 2,000 ft. above the Hudson. The remaining parts of the co. are generally broken and hilly. Esopus Creek flows in a tortuous course through the north part and discharges its waters into the Hudson. It receives Platte Kil from the north Rondout Creek enters the southwest corner of the co. and flows northeast along the W. declivity of the Shawangunk Mts. and enters the Hudson at Rondout. It receives as tributaries Sandburgh Creek in the southwest part of the co., and Wall Kil near its mouth. The latter stream flows along the E. foot of the Shawangunk Mts. The remaining streams are small brooks and creeks. The rocks of the co. are composed of the Portage and Chemung shales, in the E. part, and the Shawangunk grit or Oneida conglomerate, in the W. part. Drift deposits are found in nearly every part. Lead ore is found to some extent among the Shawangunk Mts. any hooo I've been there done that. I have a friend whom lives there. What are you looking for? A trail, Camping at a campground? or a Hostel, a cabin to rent? !!! Let me know... last edited: 4/04/08 4:24:08 PM” 4:19:41 PM 4/04/08 sams point “Sams point is not bad Where did you get your information.. u didnt mention the Wallkill flows in a northern direction.. have land here too. in the Town of Shawangunk remember the nk make the m sound” 4:26:54 PM 4/04/08 “if you have land there, Why are you asking for camping info? Pawling Nature Reserve, Dover Oak (largest tree on AT), Nuclear Lake, views of Catskill and Shawangunk mts. Camp at Telephone Pioneers Shelter.” 4:33:59 PM 4/04/08 “There's a couple of places to camp near the Gunks. Creekview Campsites is in Rosendale, just a few miles from New Paltz. It's small and around 20 bucks a night, but it's got hot showers and you'll have some privacy. The other option is the DEC Multi-use area, otherwise known as the multi-abuse area. This is on 299 near the intersection of 44/55. It's free, first come first serve and can be a zoo on the weekends. Scratch that. It IS a a zoo on the weekends, but it's 5 minutes from the Trapps parking lot. Check out www.gunks.com for good stuff about the Gunks. You'll probably find more details there about the camping.” 4:34:13 PM 4/04/08 camp “just looking for new places dont like to come out of the mountains to a drive home and back all the time” 4:34:35 PM 4/04/08 camp “thanks Pennsy but i dont want a comercial site i live just off 44/55.. perhaps i should start a free tent site” 4:37:18 PM 4/04/08
