Fuel Economy Average of 31 mpg by 2015

“Transportation Secretary Mary Peters outlined the plan on Tuesday � Earth Day � setting a schedule that was more aggressive than initially expected by the auto industry. It responds to a new energy law that requires new cars and trucks, taken as a collective average, to meet 35 miles per gallon by 2020.”

With some quick algebra I calculated that if I did 66% more driving with the 46mpg Prius relative to the 6mpg RV, my "fleet (per mile driven) average" would be exactly 31......”

“Prius: Usually only takes 10 gallons to fill (book says tank holds 11.9, but I doubt it). So I fill up for about $35 right now and can drive for ~450 miles.”

The size of homes built in the last ten years do not match the ability of potential owners ability to pay for and utilize these castles.

Although it won�t be wearing the �BlueTec� badge, the Jetta will be using emission-cleansing technologies developed under the cooperative formed by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen to make it 50-state legal. Most BlueTec vehicles control NOx emissions�one of the biggest environmental hurdles facing diesels, along with particulate matter�by injecting a urea-based solution into the exhaust system upstream from the catalytic converter, where NOx is then converted into nitrogen and water. The Jetta will instead use a NOx-storage catalyst, which is basically a reservoir that temporarily holds the noxious emissions, like a particulate filter, until they can be burned off during one of the engine cycles.

They do, but their emissions are horrible. I drove a Mercury Lynx (escort) 4 cylinder diesel for my teenage years. It was wonderful. If I had taken better care of it I could probably still be driving it.”

“Sass - a few years ago they did away with the deciles (he he) until they could clean up their act. By that I mean no new ones were released. VW had tdi's in several models and for 2-3 years they haven't been able to sell them here. The Jetta I linked above will be the first one back on the market.”

The hybrid is a way an electric car can extend it range with the infrastructure we have. The internal combustion engine and drive trains will never, even with hydrogen, reach the efficiency of electric.”

“VW in fact has sent several decile bases vehicles for testing. The SUV is rumored to get about 70 MPG....”

For cities, that's not good enough, that would mean, with growth ,we'd be back to equal pollution of now , in a few years.”
