Fellas, help me out...
Hey gang (or should that say, guys)- been a while since I've lurked on TT, but I have a question for some of you regulars who have probably experienced this annoying and embarrassing problem... Sorry it's a gross topic, but honestly, I'd like a serious answer.

Last weekend I went horseback riding before camping, so there was a little extra irritation to start with... I usually use those nifty hygiene towelettes to keep things clean and dry, but I ran out. So, after going a week without toilet paper, there was some external irritation by the time I got home. All week I've been really meticulous about keeping things clean- using the adult version baby wipes after the TP when using the restroom, lathering well in the shower, keeping the pressure washer on low, and using powder and hamptster bedding to keep things extra dry. Well, all week, I may have a very mild infection because there's been more thick green discharge than usual, even with my precautions the added moisture has aggrevated the already irritated skin, the smell scares the cat too. Today I bought some icy hot and have used it all day, every trip to the bathroom, after TPing, then moist-toweletting. Maybe it's helping some, but not really noticeably. Mostly the breeze feels good when I'm jumping around and screaming after application. Keeping in mind this is just affecting the external parts, and seems a lot like diaper rash or on animals, urine scald, do you guys have any other suggestions that you might use on the trail for this type of thing??

Thanks so much for any advice you might have!

I believe TNF makes a crotchless hiking short for men---at least that's what Nigal tells me.

oh man the hamster bedding is your problem. It may look clean after you change the hamster cage but believe me the ammonia can build up in that stuff and just cause a horrible problem. My advice... shift to shaved cedar chips and use them right out of the bag. Don't try to recycle that stuff.... it don't work.

oh yeah... and kilts.... regimental style.

Oh no, I use only the fresh clean hamptster bedding. I wouldn't risk accidentally scooping up one of the hamptsters and putting him there. As soft and fluffy as he is, those suckers have claws ya know.

'A diet of breastmilk has also been shown to decrease incidences of diaper rash, due to the lack of allergens and its antibacterial properties.'

I'm not sure if using those toilettes is the best thing. Depending on which ones you use they may be drying your skin out too much.. I used to just use baby powder..

Zinc or Gold Balm also works..

a little corn starch and some olive oil applied to the skin and you will have yourself the makings of some nice ployes. (although buckwheat is more proper but it's hard to find buckwheat powder. Ask Gremlin about ployes... he's probly had one or two in his day.

Green discharge is a problem? I think that has more to do with the microwaveable burrito you ate on the way home than anything you did while hiking.

Go outside and stick your butt up in the air for two days. That should clear it up.

You need someone to blow on the affected area on a regular basis until the thick green discharge turns more of a milky white.

Now I must say I am totally offended. A brother comes on here asking a serious and very embarressing question and you wimmin come in making all sorts of threatening posts. Why I don't understand why you can't have some sympathy for the man, even if you can't seem to understand the situation he's in. Come on people.... grow up.....

Just wouldn't be the same with out a rant. Had to do that...

Yes please keep this serious. It's difficult enough to post such a delicate question in a public forum.

~anywho~

I'm considering just using a belt sander to resurface the whole area then buffing it down with a polisher and tung oil.

I hear when applied, it provides a tough, highly water-resistant finish which does not darken noticeably with age and gives your wood a nice slight golden tint.

I think butchers wax gives a much nicer, more durable finish particularly in areas of high traffic use. Plus it buffs up really well.... and does not leave an oily residue.

It sounds like you may need to get some anti fungal cream. As crazy as it might sound, you can find the stuff that's best to use in that area in the female hygiene products. Use the stuff women use for yeast infections. That said, your best bet it to see a doctor.

Due to the recent economic downturn my wife and I have discovered a cost cutting method to treat the affliction described by HPM and her dry breast using one application of teat balm.

Response #1
I read a lot of hiking and backpacking sites, and appreciate the friendly advice etc. This is my first time here at this site, I'd googled "men's hiking hygiene" to see what other men had to say. And I get to a great question that a man had the courage to post looking for some answers. What he gets is a bunch of adolescent guffaws and leering, the usual sexual offers and innuendos, and a couple of respectful responses.

You know what, guys? If every time someone says they're a uncomfortable you say 'oh, we're just kidding! where's your sense of humor?" you're missing the point. Here's a hint: if someone you like to talk with says they're uncomfortable with what you're saying, shut up and think about it for a minute. Maybe you could change what you say, at least in their company. Maybe if you're doing something to make someone uncomfortable, out of maturity and respect you could change what you're doing, at least in their presence.

Just an idea.

And men, if some of you are LOL only because you've been told for so long that you ought to, look around. There are dozens of other forums where the joking happens but it doesn't dominate. I've never seen a thread on any other backpacking forum that smelled quite as strongly of locker room.

No need to respond on this forum, I'm not going to be back. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you people?

Kilts and free range "private" parts are the answer.
Also wash every four or five days on the trail, even if it's not needed.

HPM's last comment reminds me of a skit from SNL from the late 80's or so. It had John Lovitz and someone else. THey were sanding there talking and would add in these ridiculous things they'd done to themsleves.....I was digging out a splinter when I....(Lovitz interupts) poured Red Devil Tourpentive on it?......Yeah, yeah, that's what I did, that sutff really hurts.

No, it wasn't the pathological liar skit either.

I sure wish I could find some of those old skits on the net. Youtube be damned!

seriously--sounds like a yeast infection, and I agree with the antifungal cream, also cleaning with a weak vinegar solution. Green discharge can mean a bacterial infection. since the wipes aren't improving the situation, stop them. Keep sugary things away--yeast will grow like mad then.
