“Would it be possible to work out a shuttle set up so I could do Rough trail. I know I can't handle the whole planned hike, but I've done Rough Trail before. If so, I'm interested in this trip with a modified route. There might be a couple of other TT'ers who would be interested.

I WAS sucking air. The big problem for me was we only had 9 hours of daylight in December. I felt the pressure of completing a not-so-easy-to-follow-in-places trail before dark.”

“There's definitely some areas on Swift Camp Creek Trail that I wouldn't want to do in the dark!”

“I wouldn't be as concerned about completing Swift in the dark now since I have it logged in my GPS. I wouldn't get off track very far.

my first time on swift, i was coming from the other direction, and missed the turn there, if im thinking of the right spot. that whole area, theres potential for taking a wrong turn, since there are so many dead-end sidetrails that look like the main trail, and slowly peter out”

“this time, the issue wont be daylight, itll be heat and humidity. and possibly deep, but safe, stream crossings”

“myself included, i know of three people that are stoked about some easy climbing on sunday morning... anyone else? it's a definite go in my book. we'll pick a few easy routes, i'll lead them and fix a top-rope, and we'll climb for a few hours.”

“I would have to problem driving, however if I cannot get my wife to let me drive the van, it will be worthless for me to drive my Jeep (seats 2 including me plus gear).”

“i can carry 4 from chicagoland + gear in the back of the pickup. i have already offered a seat to crash so there are two more seats avaliable. i'll be climbing on sunday so not leaving until later on sunday (getting in late sunday night to chicagoland). if someone else offers to drive i'll gladly ride but it would have to be with a return later on sunday as i don't want to miss a chance to climb in the red for event 1/2 a day... the climbing is just too good to pass up.”

“no an Acadia. It seats 7 and has room in the back as well as up on top. It's my new ride.”

“that's a cool suv. i have never seen one of those before so it must be new. awd is great... our subaru has that (of course) and we love it. it's a bit tough on gas but it looks like it carries more passengers than my 4wd pickup -but- can also carry the cargo. very cool. congrats on the new car!”

Birch can't make this one but has offered to take care of arranging sitters and stiff for the kidlet so I am considering myself there, unless gas prices hit too high or something.

“have any of you non-climbers that are going to climb ever belayed a lead before? i may be taking my life in my hands (or yours to be more precise) as i fix a top-rope.

i think 4assmonkey will becoming and if so he can belay me on lead. it won't matter because i won't fall.”

“as was mentioned before, the last time we did this, time was a factor due to the limited december daylight. however, this time we will have plenty of time, so i recommend we take a few sidetrips. there are plenty to choose from”

“gotta pick a good place to climb. left flank is pretty good... esp top-rope on "mr bungle"... it's a 5.8+ but really that's for the start and then it's a lot easier as you get up. new climbers can hang past the first draw on top-rope. my 8-year old climbed it and only needed a boost to the start. then "face up to that crack" is again a great climb and is a 5.8 but more because of a tough start... it gets a lot easier as you go up.

if i can get a good belay i would love to climb "to defy the laws of tradition" (5.10a). i climbed this last year and i was easily the best sport route i climbed all year.

“wow. that looks harder than 5.10. i climbed with a guide in WV and he told me one of the routes i climbed was a 5.10. being in different parts of the country, ratings could vary some, i guess”

“the holds are small but it's got a lot of pockets and good crimpers. lots of places to toe-in. many ways to climb it. a lot of fun. the rock in the red is sandstone and very grippy so the smallest of holds do the job very well. lots of chalk on this wall as you can see but you seldom need any in the red... the sandstone is very, very grippy. outstanding climbing quality.”
