All vehicles ON KY 15 or IN the Red River Gorge and Indian Creek area north of KY 15 must display a recreation permit for backcountry camping between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. 1 day for $3; 3 day for $5; Annual for $30. http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/districts/cumberland/redriver_gorge.shtml last edited: 5/05/08 8:54:42 PM” 8:53:18 PM 5/05/08 “Oh, and you can order your pass in the mail: http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone/recreation/feepermit/passorder.pdf -or- you can pick one up at the Shell station in Slade when you arrive.” 8:59:44 PM 5/05/08 “i dont have to get my permit. im riding with you what im saying is, the area west of tunnel ridge road is NOT the rrg area im just asking out of curiousity. everyone should get a permit, because we will be on the rrg side” 9:01:42 PM 5/05/08 “i know that but the web site says what it says. ok, so let me read this again. ON 15... -or- IN the Red River Gorge and Indian Creek area north of KY 15 so i would agree that the area on that side of trr is north of ky 15 -but- is not in Red River Gorge or Indian Creek so i would agree that a pass should not be required. i bet the actual line that marks the edge of the gorge isn't trr but runs to one side of it. why else would they build those parking areas and toilets there? the park must own that land to have built on it. i added permit info to the trip page.” 9:08:16 PM 5/05/08 “Said another way it is illegal to park on trr and the parking lots must belong to the park. So you have to park your car in the park no matter where you camp. So my bet is a pass is required. I take what I said back.” 5:08:50 AM 5/06/08 “I am out. I wish I could have my cousin pick a stand in for me, however I don't think I can. His wedding is this Saturday, I totally forgot. One of these years I may be able to do this hiking thing again.” 6:38:07 AM 5/06/08 “The permit is well worth the price, just to give some funds to RRG. I thought I was going to have to back out but I'm not. I had scheduled horse back riding lessons for the troop but half of them can't go anyways so it's off for that weekend. Upluver and I will be meeting up in Lima to ride share, and I need to change my maybe to a yes.” 6:56:54 AM 5/06/08 “my cousin's kid is getting married that saturday, too, but as im only a spectator, i choose the red” 7:20:00 AM 5/06/08 “I wish it was a child because I would avoid it as well. Gotta start thinking about a fall trip now.” 7:26:55 AM 5/06/08 “dude, you were camped under a sign that said "No Camping" and we made you move. haha! better let mugsy do the navigating... I was just waiting there for you guys. TMSAISTI” 7:56:56 AM 5/06/08 “I knew you could do it Sass! hehe WK - I feel your pain, man...it really sucks when life gets in the way of backpacking, doesn't it?” 8:15:24 AM 5/06/08 “cool sass! crash, i think wounded knee just called you a child... TMSAISTI <-- had to google this to figure out wtf you were saying, chin! :) at least you didn't have a fire.” 8:26:57 AM 5/06/08 “oh, and 80% of the fees collected by the permits go to the park. it is indeed a good deal sass.” 8:27:19 AM 5/06/08 “There is no park. RRG is part of the Daniel Boone NF; Cumberland District. It is a geological area and because of high visitation to the geological area they started the permit system. Yes the left side is not considered part of the RRG geological area but a permit is still required because the parking areas are for the trail system in the RRG geological area. If you want to call it anything it is The Gorge but it is not a park. The Gorge is what us Kentuckians call it.” 6:42:53 PM 5/06/08 “actually, what i had heard was that you dont have to follow the x amount of feet from trail or road rule. i was just assuming about the park pass rule” 7:28:42 PM 5/06/08 “Natural Bridge State Resort Park http://parks.ky.gov/findparksresortparks/nb// last edited: 5/06/08 7:34:28 PM” 7:34:18 PM 5/06/08 “(hehe)” 7:34:47 PM 5/06/08 “yea, but thats not the red, you dork” 7:36:14 PM 5/06/08 ““actually, what i had heard was that you dont have to follow the x amount of feet from trail or road rule. i was just assuming about the park pass rule” crash bang You are correct for the left side of Tunnel Ridge Rd. because it is not part of the gorge. I called them when they set up the primitive camping areas to see if the rule of 300 applied to them because of the conditions at Half Moon. Even the designated primitive sites in the gorge itself do not require the 300'. They will ticket you if you camp within 300' feet of the roads except in the designated primitive camp areas. Trails have the usual LNT 150' suggestion it is not something you will get a ticket for breaking...unless you do like chin and camp under a no camping sign...just kidding dude. Actually I did that one time on a solo trip. The sign was facing the trail opposite from where I came and I didn't see it until I broke camp next morning. When I turned around to check for forgotten items I saw it...it was a great spot. “Natural Bridge State Resort Park last edited: 5/06/08 10:34:28 PM” Yogisan Part of the KY Dept. of Parks, not part of the forest service and not part of the geological area...as crash said you dork ;b,,,” 3:07:43 AM 5/07/08 “What the hell is Captain Jack doin' on this sub-40 mile trip? 8P” 3:37:59 AM 5/07/08 “Even the designated primitive sites in the gorge itself do not require the 300'. so sites next to the trail are legal, as long as they are at least 300 feet from the road, and dont have a "no camping" sign?” 5:40:22 AM 5/07/08 “how early do you guys foresee shoving off saturday morning?” 5:55:35 AM 5/07/08 “3 a.m.” 6:11:32 AM 5/07/08 “reeeeeaaaaaly?” 6:12:42 AM 5/07/08 “ ”6:14:30 AM 5/07/08 “how early do you guys foresee shoving off saturday morning? I'm taking off as soon as I wake up.” 10:21:41 AM 5/07/08 “You all don't want to be going anywhere at 3am. 7 or 8 is much nicer.” 10:41:44 AM 5/07/08 “Will Mugsy be safe so soon after Crash returning from Korea?” 10:48:35 AM 5/07/08 “... it's 300' from maintained trails and roads. those camp sites you see, crash, are illegal camp sites. the gorge has been loved to death by firebugs and illegal campers. walk along auxier ridge some day and see all the "lovers of the gorge" camped illegally along the cliffs, on the trail, and under the rockshelter below haystack rock. these are people that feel a sense of entitlement... not a sense of conservation. terrible... i am not aware of any designated primative camp sites other than those on trr. where are these?” 11:36:05 AM 5/07/08 ASTRONOMICAL DATA “Twilight: 5:48am Sunrise: 6:20am Sunset: 9:09pm Twilight: 9:41pm Moonrise: 11:31pm Moonset: 8:47am” 11:43:46 AM 5/07/08 “I'm taking off as soon as I wake up. ChinMusic 1:21:41 PM LOL, i could wait till you wake up to leave indy, drive down, and still catch up with you ;) j/k” 11:45:59 AM 5/07/08 “weren't we talking about what time we were starting the hike on saturday? i sure ain't gonna be at crash's place at 3am on friday!” 11:57:54 AM 5/07/08 “I don't have my map in front of me but the newest green plastic map from the forest service shows them. I seem to remember Angels Window and Half Moon Arch(across the road from it). I think there is one other besides the ones on Tunnel Ridge. I just tried checking the forest service site but it is down for maintenance.” 12:24:37 PM 5/07/08 “yeah, i saw that as well. it was working yesterday. ahhhh government services!” 1:10:44 PM 5/07/08 “hey, you guys do realize what day the day of our hike is, right? i'll give you a hint: you might see this guy: ”6:38:06 PM 5/07/08 “ARGH! MY EYES! MY EYES!” 6:49:53 PM 5/07/08 “I have no idea, crash...National Nude Backpacking Day?” 8:19:05 AM 5/08/08 “Technically he's not nude since he's wearing a hat.” 10:10:35 AM 5/08/08 “stupid work filter” 10:13:41 AM 5/08/08 “Thrifty likes nude hikers” 10:18:23 AM 5/08/08 “i admire the human form” 10:20:09 AM 5/08/08 “You mean you guys are packing clothes?! Geez. Well, I guess I will too. I wouldn't want to stand out. ;)” 11:19:56 AM 5/08/08 “Children, trust me on this, you WANT me to pack and wear LOTS of clothes...” 11:23:14 AM 5/08/08 “not meant in reference to mata's comment but... why is it that all the people that you would WANT to see nekid are never sans clothing but all the people that REALLY SHOULD NOT me nekid so often are? this is an amazing thing.” 2:54:21 PM 5/08/08 “will you hike nekkid with me Yogi? LOL! What up bro?!” 3:24:20 PM 5/08/08 “2010! here we come... i am climbing that mountain dude.” 4:28:10 PM 5/08/08 “hey is that the ellingwood arete or military wall in picture 2? i always get the two confused” 7:56:09 AM 5/13/08 Jump to Page << prev
