NEW YORK —

New York Rangers forward Sean Avery was taken to a hospital in cardiac arrest hours after the team lost a playoff game to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Daily News reported Wednesday on its Web site.

The newspaper reported Avery was unconscious and not breathing when he was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center. The 28-year-old arrived about 3 a.m. Wednesday, a hospital source told the newspaper.

A person close to the team told the newspaper Avery had been rushed to the hospital.

The Rangers lost 5-3 at home Tuesday night, falling behind 3-0 in their second-round series with the Penguins.

Avery had an assist on the Rangers' second goal in Tuesday night's game.

That's bad. Generally they just remove them.

They said they wouldn't even have to operate. They think it was a check in the first period of the game. Try and tell me (other than rugby players)that there are any tougher athletes than hockey players! I won't believe it!

I miss my days playing Rugby in the Army.

The worst injury I ever saw was in a game in Germany. A new kid was playing and he got his games mixed up, Rugby or American Football. He was a football player and forgot that you don't block in rugby. He blocked a guy and attempted a jersey tackle, even though the guy didn't have the ball. In rugby you can only tackle the guy with the ball. Legally, that is. When he tried the jersey tackle he forgot to drop his lead hand. When you jersey tackle someone you grab the front of their jersey and spin them to the ground. To do this you drop the hand leading the spin and the body follows. In this case, he lifted his leading hand and tried to spin. The spin lifted the guy he was trying to tackle completely off his feet and spun him through the air. Then his boot hit the jawline of the guy who had the ball. The ball carrier was immediately knocked unconcious and fell to the ground coughing up teeth. There was an amazing amount of blood pouring from his mouth and every once in a while he would cough and spit up another tooth or two. His jaw was broken in three places and he lost ALL of his teeth on the left side.

World wide there are usually a couple deaths a year attributed to on field injuries.

One can't get cut by a metal skate or hit be a piece of metal encased in frozen rubber traveling at 90+ mph in lacrosse. ;-)

Never cared for Avery or his antics on or off the ice, but hope he has a full recovery.

Not being a participant in either sport, it is hard for me to compare....

....however, one has no pads to ward off the blow from a big ugly stick in LaCrosse.

Many times I've seen hockey players get stitched up and go back in to play and Darius Kasparaitis played part of the 2nd period and all of the third period of a game with a broken foot.

I can safely say I'd get demolished in either sport. I'll stick with hunting and fishing thanks.

I watched Paul Kariya get knocked unconscious and come back later on to score the game winning goal.

Kevin Stevens got hit and was knocked unconscious and fell right on his face on the ice and since he was unconsious he didn't break his fall. Broke most of the bones in his face! That was very hard to watch.

UPDATE
Rangers forward Sean Avery remained in an intensive care unit Thursday, two days after his spleen was lacerated during a playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“He won’t be removed from there until it stops bleeding, and it hasn’t,” team spokesman John Rosasco said Thursday after the Rangers held their morning skate before Game 4.

Avery spent Wednesday in the hospital after his injury ended his season. He is expected to be hospitalized at least a few days. Avery did not need surgery, and Rosasco said he is expected to make a full recovery.

“He was never in a life-threatening situation,” Rosasco said.

Avery’s mother, Marlene, told the Toronto Sun her son’s spleen had not ruptured, but he had internal bleeding. Hospital spokesman Michael Fagan said Avery was in stable condition.

The spleen, about the size of a fist, is on the left side of the body, behind the stomach. It helps the body fight infection and filter blood. A person can live without a spleen but loses some ability to combat infection.

He was injured during Tuesday night’s 5-3 loss from a hit, possibly in the first period, but played despite worsening pain. He took seven shifts in the first period, five in the second, and seven in the third. He spent 4 minutes, 58 seconds on the ice in the final period.

Rosasco said Avery was evaluated at the arena, then rode in a car with team physician Dr. Andrew Feldman to St. Vincent’s Medical Center and walked in shortly after the game.

The Rangers, trying to extend their season, also learned Thursday that Blair Betts will be sidelined. The center was diagnosed with broken orbital bone around his left eye and is expected to have surgery this weekend.

Betts was injured while blocking a shot in the second period Tuesday night. Fellow center Chris Drury skated Thursday and will be a game-time decision. He played through a torso injury that made it difficult for him to raise his arms during the second half of Game 3.

“He’ll dress in the warmup,” Renney said. “It’s looking good.”

The Rangers are 33-14-10 with Avery this season and 9-13-3 when he was out with injuries. He was acquired from Los Angeles in February 2007 and sparked a playoff run in which the Rangers went 17-6-6 in games he played.

Avery frustrated New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur during the first round. In Game 3, Avery planted himself in the crease with his back to the action and face-guarded the goalie. The next day the NHL barred such activity with the “Avery Rule.”

Brodeur was so incensed by Avery’s crease-crashing and trash-talking that he refused to shake his hand after the Rangers’ clinching victory in Game 5. Avery tied for the team lead with three goals in the series.

Avery’s targets often find themselves mouthing off, or worse, getting so angered that they draw a penalty.

“It’s emotional and intense,” Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. “Guys are not the best of friends on the ice, but you never want to see someone’s health in jeopardy. I think we all wish him the best.”

Avery has feuded with 41-year-old Penguins forward Gary Roberts, who has yet to play in this series. Despite 21 seasons of NHL experience, Roberts lost his cool during a November game and took a high-sticking penalty against Avery that led to a goal in a Rangers victory.

Roberts called Avery “an idiot” after his antics with Brodeur, but took a softer tone when told of the spleen injury.

“There’s hockey and then there is life and your health,” he said. “You don’t wish that on anybody.”

According to Tango's story, Avery walked into the hospital. Can you walk while in cardiac arrest? Are the news outlets again driving toward sensationalism or what?

The story on NHL.com said the cardiac arrest report was false.
