Bear Dung
What does bear dung look like? (can't say the vulgar word I guess.

Is it similar to dog crap but larger or has it got a more distinctive look? I saw a lot of moose signs knowing it was moose because the balls of dung were larger. I saw small signs that looked like cat #&%!$t - possibly a fox? But I honestly don't know about bear.

Black bear scat smells like berries and acorns and has bits of shell and seeds in it.

Grizz scat smells like pepper spray and contains little jingle bells.

There's this incredible thing called "the internet", invented by Al Gore a few years ago.... if you type in "Bear Scat Identification" in the google toolbar you'll get about 10 pages of references...

and if you ask on trailtalk, an actual human being will answer you, you might get a better answer, some humor, as well as a few snotty "lookitupongoogle" replies

It's a real zoo here.
You will see posters who can't operate the "CAPS" feature, those who haven't got a kind word, them hooz grammer eats it and even some decent advice.

The bear crap I've seen is not huge and kinda shriveled with berry seeds and stuff in it and kind of blackish.

If you want to know what it tastes like, ask the Rev.

Most of what I've seen has been in pile form rather than turd form and almost always had tons of seeds in it.

Heh, heh.....turd.

I was trying to get through a large briar berry patch to a new fishing hole. I found an animal trail I assumed would take me there as it seemed to be headed for the lake. I came out to this wide area about 6' in diameter or so where the bushes had all been flattened down. Right in the middle of this trampled space was a large pile of shiny black wet scat. I honestly don't remember if it was steaming or not. But it was obviously not very old.

I decided I did not need to continue down the animal path, having a pretty good idea what made it, and not desiring a close encounter of any kind.

I know for it wouldn't have been grizz because PA ain't got grizzs... but I was equally sure it was of the ursine variety and that's all I needed to know.

I always compare it to what horse crap would look like if a horse stood still while crapping...

Usually a big pile.. not pellets...

Ramblin Rev... I know the feeling.. I was hiking around clingman's dome a few years back towards dusk... I back tracked up a path and while there was 1 pile going north, I found 2 piles going back south...

The last mile took an eternity...

As you can see from the scat photos, it all depends on what the bear ate before pooping. When HPM and I hiked out to CS 74 in Smokies one fall, the trail was covered with acorn-based bear scat, and smelled disturbingly like peanut butter.
