Booked myself a September trip to Fairbanks for a week. Hopefully I will see the aurora borealis, find a chunk of gold, and see Denali. I am totally stoked.

Not backpacking, admittedly, but these old legs won't take that, so I go the other route. Still should be a blast (hopefully not of the volcanic variety).

If I had a life list, viewing the aurora borealis would be at the top of it

Trip starts tomorrow. Weather forecast for the week is rain, rain showers, snow, snow showers, clouds, fog, and probably pestilence. Hopefully the forecast will be off for a few of those days. But the aurora is not likely, and Denali is also not likely. Unless the forecasters are way off the beam.

Hmmm, latest forecast gives me three partly cloudy days. There may yet be hope.

Geo, I hope you have a fantastic time and get at least a glimpse of all the things you are hoping to see.

Good luck, man. Hope Denali gives you a chance.

Got great photos of Denali and the Alaska Range. Also the musk oxen at the U. of Alaska Fairbanks Large Animal Research facility. Heading out now in search of aurora.

It's beautiful, and it's cold. Snowed overnight last night, but just a dusting.

Low was 20 on Sunday morning, but 14 at Eilson AF Base.

Good luck with the aurora ---- !

"NOAA forecasters estimate a 30%-40% chance of more geomagnetic activity tonight as the solar wind continues to blow. Sky watchers from Scandinavia to Alaska should remain alert for auroras."
