Gulf of Mexico?
Hi! I'm new to this board. I've been hiking a bit on normal trails around my area, but I would love to explore the Gulf of Mexico. Is there anyone out there who knows whether hiking around the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Texas is possible? Or advisable? Thanks!

Check out the FL Trail.

But you mean like a long beach walk? I'd think lodging would be the big issue. That and tan lines from your pack.

A lot of the Gulf shore has no beach.

I've hiked much of the Fl Trail already. What I'd like to do is walk along the beach and other areas surrounding the Gulf, from Florida all the way to Texas, like over a period of several months. I would stay in local hotels. Has anyone tried this before?

You would be pushed to the Hwy 90 / I-10 corridor alot by the marshes. There is also alot of private land that you would have to cross. I would think you would have some legal issues in some areas.

while our beach is public some north of us are private. there are many bridges, you could do a road walk but camping would be a problem. most people who live along the beach don't tolerate strangers camping on the beach, also the police patrol our beach. we do have a KOA not far from the beach.

Sail it.

I once took a boat from Mobile toward Corpus with a friend. Bad weather was brewing in the Gulf and we can straight down wind back to New Orleans. It was a ride!

Sidenote:

Dammit, my wife is logged in.

Ok, now that I corrected that.

The Alabama portion of that hike would be a bust.

First of all, the strip on the coast is pretty much a peninsula on the west side. You would have to go north of the InterCoastal at 59 and hike across there. Then you would be forced to make your way around a big ass bay.

Then you could do your best to get back down toward Bayou La Batre which would be damn near impossible if you attempted a beach walk.

From there it would be hit or miss to get to the MS state line.

Nice concept, not doable IMHO.

Doable in a kayak. Lots of barrier islands where you could camp.

Hiking around the Gulf is the opposite of why I enjoy backpacking.

I want cool weather, mountains, no bugs, low humidity, fresh clear streams, no sunburn, no people.

But it's a dang good hike if you're into titties and beer.

Hiking and beer are polar opposites.

That is way more doable. The intercoastal waterway would make this a snap.

I think about half the gulf coast of Florida is a kayak trail, and there are a bunch of them in Texas.
