I would either ride in with Crash or just take a cab from your house and back I have never been to your house, can you email me your address. My email is on my profile! See ya later. Randall” 8:18:09 AM 6/24/08 Randall & Crash “you both have mail Have a Safe & wild trip” 8:51:00 AM 6/24/08 “if you go to oldogs, 12:30 would be sufficient” 9:40:29 AM 6/24/08 “looks like we can expect low 40's in nabesna, how much higher is the elevation for where we're going to be? what's the elevation at nabesna?” 4:34:16 PM 6/24/08 “Look at your map!” 4:37:12 PM 6/24/08 “Nabesna approx 3000 ft, Mesa Jaegar approx 6000ft. Mt Gordon 9040 ft, first 2 nights camp near small lake approx 5200 ft. NO TRAILS LIKE YOUR AT HIKE. last edited: 6/24/08 4:51:39 PM” 4:43:01 PM 6/24/08 “Look at your map!” is nabesna on the map? no trails? i'm bailin' and please dont have a hissy and remove this thread, too >:-)” 4:54:26 PM 6/24/08 dear mister trip leader sir “please dont yell at me and tell me to read the email, but what am i supposed to have at the bus station to get on? confirmation number? picture ID? also, what's a good definitive book or website on grizzly safety? yes, i already know the basics, yes i could google it, but i wanted to hear your (or anyone else's) opinion” 8:17:32 PM 6/24/08 “You can pay the driver....$170 bucks round trip.....Don't forget your backpack and boots. U Uh and don't forget your food and tent and clothes and map and cooking gear and water bottle and money and slepping bag and uuuuhh just bring all your gear Crash....” 2:57:30 AM 6/25/08 “i already paid 170 bucks to the company...twice...they accidentally double-charged my debit card. i have to wait for my bank statement with my charge on it to come out, then fax it to them before i can get the charge removed” 6:59:30 AM 6/25/08 “Will they accept cash or should I bring some wampum?” 7:02:13 AM 6/25/08 “Being in great shape is good Grizzley advice, just don't be the slowest in the group :)” 7:18:07 AM 6/25/08 Crash!! “Crash, I will be at Sam's house at 12:30 on 7/1/2008. He has emailed me the address, do you have it? If not I will forward it to you via your email. Thank you for your help and I will keep watching this thread for updates. Wow!! Less than 6 days ta go!! See ya later. Randall” 7:51:27 AM 6/25/08 “The nps site for glacier national park likely has some good grizzly country 'basic practices'... Denali's probably does as well. basics - cook well away from your sleep area, at least 100 yards (although the designated sites in glacier aren't that far away). Hang (or otherwise store) your clothes that you cooked in overnight - Keep clean, food-smell-free clothes to sleep in. Sleep with your bear spray close at hand. Be sure you can outrun fridge. :) Being in grizz country is exciting. Read this - good/great article: http://www.summitpost.org/article/410920/Meeting-the-Great-Bear.html” 8:24:29 AM 6/25/08 “sleeping upwind from your food and cooking area is a good idea, too. captain jack told me about some detergent/spray that you can treat your camp clothes, tent, etc with to remove any food and other smells. should arrive tomorrow by ups. i'll be treating my hiking clothes with permethrin, too not so sure sleeping with your bear spray is a good idea. after all, i'm sure it's a smellable and will only attract a bear. whattaya gonna do if a bear attacks you in your tent? spray him then? then it's all over your tent and if you survive the encounter, youre grizbait for sure the next night” 10:46:40 AM 6/25/08 “randall, if you have a cell phone, send me the number oldog, please send me your number(s) as well” 10:47:46 AM 6/25/08 “The bear spray doesn't smell until you discharge the canister. I'm thinking that you might be able to use it if a bear was in your camp area, not necessarily in the tent with you. last edited: 6/25/08 11:15:11 AM” 11:14:13 AM 6/25/08 “My tent is too small for both me and a griz.” 12:44:10 PM 6/25/08 “The bear spray doesn't smell until you discharge the canister. how is that possible?” 1:58:03 PM 6/25/08 “Buy a big gun that holds lots of bullets” 2:27:04 PM 6/25/08 “I have a 44 magnum......enough said.....period......” 2:56:20 PM 6/25/08 “no one asked what size condom fridge, youve got mail” 3:02:46 PM 6/25/08 ““The bear spray doesn't smell until you discharge the canister. how is that possible?” crash bang 2:58:03 PM 6/25/08 dude - have you SEEN a cannister of bear spray? It's like a miniature fire extinguisher!” 3:05:56 PM 6/25/08 “I can't wait to hear the trip report on this!” 3:07:43 PM 6/25/08 “crash you have mail.....Mike P... the fastest guy running from a GRIZ will be the first one flagged down....Panic will only develope trouble....and MikeP this is my first time backpacking ever and I wanted it to be special....44 magnum with a can of bear spray between my legs....” 3:14:09 PM 6/25/08 “mike, i have a bear spray canister. i understand the discharging part. what i dont understand is, how is it not smellable until that point?” 3:32:59 PM 6/25/08 “crash.....have you ever hiked ever? Have you ever had a can of bear spray in your hands? Have you ever been to Cranberry glades?” 3:54:34 PM 6/25/08 ““mike, i have a bear spray canister. i understand the discharging part. what i dont understand is, how is it not smellable until that point?” crash bang 4:32:59 PM 6/25/08 coz it's sealed. think about it man - it's under LOTS of pressure in that can - it's sealed up TIGHT. it's not a smellable - not even a little bit. Besides, your at your most vulnerable when your asleep at night. You've got a bear in camp - don't you want your bear spray close by instead of hung up in a tree with your food?” 4:04:46 PM 6/25/08 ““Buy a big gun that holds lots of bullets” Wounded Knee 3:27:04 PM 6/25/08 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I have a 44 magnum......enough said.....period......” Refrigerator 3:56:20 PM 6/25/08 That's all well and good, but you don't need but one bullet - unless you want to have enuff for your friends too, but I don't think you'll have that much time if push comes to shove. :)” 4:06:16 PM 6/25/08 “Mike P.....I have never shot a weapon before.. and I have never see a bear ever or ever.....Not even a deer. I did see a chipmunk once though. Are you a backpacker?” 5:08:05 PM 6/25/08 “oh and Mike P Thank you so much about your post on one bullet, I forgot about bullets... I had better pack one in my backpack.. would have been kinda tt of me to take a weapon and no bullets du huuu..” 5:25:28 PM 6/25/08 “you may be right, mike, but i'm not convinced that just because something is under pressure that it's not smellable to one of the strongest noses in the world. bears have noses that are hundreds of times more powerful than even a huntin dog” 6:28:23 PM 6/25/08 “Hey do you think REI will take the unused bear sprays back?” 6:31:34 PM 6/25/08 “i bet they would” 6:32:23 PM 6/25/08 “Then I'm gonna have to smell that sucka's breath before I discharege!LOL!” 6:34:14 PM 6/25/08 “Spam - that ain't too far from the truth - the effective range is about 30 feet. :-O Crash - do your own research - ask at the store you bought it - write the manufacturer. Swear - its NOT smellable - it's PERFECTLY safe to have in your tent. Fridge - i've only backpacked a couple of times - but i'm exceedingly well read.” 8:27:06 PM 6/25/08 .357 Mag--Core Bon Ammo “That's my Bear spray!! See ya later. Randall” 8:45:30 PM 6/25/08 “I think yall are nuts thinking ANY handgun, don't care HOW big the barrel is will stop a grizzly.” 8:54:37 PM 6/25/08 “i read somewhere that a bear can smell what's inside a steel can of food... not because the food odors can get out of the metal can but because the bear can smell the residual food odors on the OUTSIDE of the can that originated at the plant where the food was processed.” 9:06:37 PM 6/25/08 “huh, well i won't dispute that you read that, but I have some doubts about the concept. If it was freshly packaged, perhaps, but most canned food sits in storage too long and is handled way to much for any residual odor to remain.” 9:48:44 PM 6/25/08 “Read more Mike P .....You need it. Before the books were written... most of us was out there backpacking.....I'll send you a couple alaska forums you need to join.....ask them about weapons, etc,.....they will know you are way down south.....heheh here is one now...http://alaskabookstore@outdoorsdirectory.com/ last edited: 6/26/08 2:52:52 AM” 2:48:36 AM 6/26/08 “On my way out to do my last two days of work before it's trip time! YEEMUTHAFREAKINHAW!” 3:35:13 AM 6/26/08 “Use the bear spray first. Studies show it is safer and more effective than a firearm. The bear that put his claw marks into the bear canister that CrashBang is using got a whiff of the spray, and took off running like it had been kicked in the butt.” 3:55:28 AM 6/26/08 “carry a pistol, and feel safe. After all it is effective. It will stop, scare, and prevent your predator if used correctly in all events.” 4:26:32 AM 6/26/08 “I think Crash Bang should carry the sixty. Fridge can be ammo bearer.” 4:35:03 AM 6/26/08 “They are Hi Techies, they have their image's to maintain. The little critters already have cartoons posted.” 5:19:28 AM 6/26/08
