Car Camping Q- Inflatable Mattress
I know this is not related to hardcore backpacking, but I'm looking to purchase an inflatable full/double mattress for my GF and I on a week long trip down to the Ozarks. In the car I have your typical cigarette adapter tire air pump. I'd love to use my tire pump to inflate the mattress (buy an adapter?) but I don't know how to make it work. Here is the mattress I am considering:

And the Pump they recommend I purchase:

Anyone else used an inflatable mattress w/out purchasing a separate pump? I'd be open to other brands of inflatable mattresses w/ different air pump attachments if it worked out for the better. thx.

Don't know. I would think you could find a pvc fitting the size of the opening in the mattress and then a series of reducers to bring it down to the size of the output hose on your pump. A couple of band clamps and you might make it work.

My question would be "would your existing pump deliver the volume of air needed?"

It might deliver psi for a bike tire, but the tire won't use anywhere near the volume you need for the mattress.

I bought an air mattress and the pump that was made for it. Extra money, but it works.

That said, I am not at all happy with the air mattress. If I inflate it fully it's too hard and if I inflate it less the damn thing wobbles and billows like waves on the ocean.

Back to the old reliable TermaRest.

The few times I used one geobeet, I had the same problems.

There must be some trick to it I can't figure out.

We have an air mattress and have found that the best way to make it feel like a regular bed is to put our spare memory foam mattress (about 3 inches thick) on top of it.

Yeah Chili ... a trick we can't figure out. Like some SOB getting rich by ripping us off for the price of something that isn't worth what it cost.

I tried using my ThermaRest on top of the air mattress and realized that the air in the air mattress was colder than if I put the ThermaRest on the floor of the tent. That was a Homer Simpson "Doh!" moment.

I find that if you get anywhere near the edge it just launches you off the mattress like fighter being catapulted off the deck of an aircraft carrier.

LMAO, yes! Apt description. You wake up and wonder, "How the hell did I get here?"
