Sipsey-Bankhead Bushwhack - Fall '08

“LOL...Jerbear....we will be to the East of Sipsey Wilderness but still in Bankhead Forest....the best map I have found is "Black Warrior Wildlife Managment Area of the William B. Bankhead National Forest" published by Carto-Craft Maps...There is a neat little store in Wren Alabama ( on the corner of route 33 & 36) where you can purchase it..it also has Sougahoagdee Falls located on the map...wooo hoooo!!! ( also the last REAL toilet stop before the trailhead...lol....)

You've got a good trip planned and sounds like a lively crew to join you. I know we won't be able to camp but I hope Tripper and I can hike in and meet some of you on Saturday. The native Americans of the area consider this a sacred site. I don't know the history behind it but have been there on more than one occasion when they were having some type of ceremony. Your plan to camp near Brushy is a good one.
The first time I went there as a boy the falls was called Sow Creek Falls.
Enjoy. Already some pretty color showing in the forest.

“I should elaborate. My first backpacking trip ever was to Blood Mtn. I knew Rad, gojo, and om would be on the trip. I had been talking with Rad a good bit leading up to this trip. Sure enough, I bumped into them. That made them the first 3 TT'ers I ever met. I've since had several trips with gojo. I have never bumped into om or rad again. Now we throw bear into this. He's another iconic TT'er. I only got to meet him briefly at TC2.

This trip is really shaping up as great from both a location and attendee standpoint.”

that would normally be a super idea, but I am going to be leaving on election day to head up into N. Ga mountains for my yearly solo trek with my dog then zipping across on Friday to do this Sipsey weekend before heading back south.
But,If you can take off on Tuesday..let me know..would be fun...of course, i have never met you, so I would have to get some endorsement of your sanity and stuff from TT people that know you!:)
