What are you guys wringing your hands for anyway? Look at MarkO's links: it doesn't say the glaciers are drying up, it says they're going to flood the towns. Flood = LOTS of water so problem solved.

The survey of a cross-section of 1,500 publicans,...

That's so cool! I'm switchin' political parties and becoming a publican. Our mascot animal is the drunken monkey and our representatives throw poo at the labor party during kangaroo court.

Or, wai, is publican a verb?

Couple poisoned after eating cut-price supermarket grapes tainted with spider venom

The best part: "Mr and Mrs Williams, of Barry in Wales, have become the UK's tenth and eleventh victims of false widows which experts say are spreading thanks to global warming."

"They were monitored closely for several hours and have now made an official complaint to the supermarket in Wadebridge, Cornwall - which has offered to pay them back the £2 cost of the grapes."

I think the supermarket's gonna pay a lot more than 2 pounds after the inevitable lawsuit.

But yeah, wash the fruit!

Speaking of panic.

The bomb squad is outside the building where I work investigating a suspicious package. They've got Wall-E out here poking at the package and everything.

The stir created by Edouard could therefore have a considerable impact on the coast’s vulnerable infrastructure. In the short term this could mean higher oil and gas prices, as any sane operator in the Gulf will reduce operations in the storm’s path, which will put upward pressure on prices. Speculation that the tropical storm might slow down production could also lead to a price spike, and such speculation is susceptible to post-Katrina and post-Rita paranoia. Furthermore, there is the possibility that real damage could shutter production and drive prices up. Edouard provides another example of the sort of seasonal disruption that — combined with ongoing technical challenges — reduces the long-term productivity of the Gulf Coast, making the region untenable as a solution for U.S. energy needs. - Stratfor

Have any of these storms ever caused enough damage to interrupt supply? (serious question)

After Katrina, Gulf of Mexico oil production was temporarily 0% - 20% of normal.

edit: and I believe the LOOP was shut down for a week. Reserves were more than enough to compensate, however.

Stratfor doesn't get much right does it.

NonC - Katrina was the biggie - one of Shell's biggest rigs in the region took a big hit, I think it broke the cables and was floating about the Gulf. It spiked natural gas prices from about $7 to over $16/mmBtu.

Most of the damage has been fairly limited in the past few years, and they tend to shut of flows and evacuate - but there is still a lot of potential in there for production disruption. with supplies being tight even a small hit on production can spike prices.

Edouard held up prices in oil and nat gas for a day, but that's about it.

It amazes me that those rigs are as strong as they are. Quite the engineering feat for them to stand up to some of the storms they have. To have flow barely disrupted after Katrina is pretty astounding--to me anyway.

Hotel platforms are fun.   The guys who were out in 10-12-foot seas said in October the water would be sloshing out of the sinks in the galley and the balls were bouncing around on the pool table downstairs.

And that wouldn't be nearly rough enough to evacuate.

Jumping onto the dock from the crew boat in 5-foot seas was enough fun for me.   You have to time it just right ----

They were a little over the board with the prediction for this particular storm, yes. That's why I made fun of it. However, you agree with their main point when you say the potential for disruption is high and the impact on prices.

Well not really - there's that much in there compared to energy needs. The hurricane risk for serious damage measured over years is not great - even if the odd storm causes them to evacuate some rigs.

And it's not a 'solution' for US energy needs - but is certainly part of it. The hurricane threat is not really a reason for it not to be part of the plan.

I guess it is right to say it's not some big magical solution to things though - they overplay the hurricane thing.

All this talk about swine flu making people sick and possible maybe sort of almost dying, yet we never hear this kind of panic when a pig gets it. Won't someone think of the swine?

Last thing anyone wants to see is a bunch of pigs lying in mud with fevers and maybe a little vomiting. Do they make those little dust masks to fit over snouts?
