Wife Wants To Spend Some Time On The Water “I'm looking for ideas of where my wife and I can go for a weekend and rent some kayaks for a saturday? Some lake with lots of nook and crannies to explore, and in an area having nightlife for landlubbers. Or, if any of you know of an online forum where I might find folks who could recommend a spot? Lots of info on kayaking on the internet, but trying to narrow down a search and get what I want has been so far next to impossible. So I'm hoping some of younz hikers in these areas could help me out.” 5:43:00 PM 6/29/08 “Hey Buddur haven't seen you on this site in a while. A few places come to mind in my area. Old Forge: You can paddle on the Moose River or the Fulton Chain of lakes. I believe Mountainman Outdoors rents. They're located right where Route 28 crosses the Moose River on the west side of town. http://www.mountainmanoutdoors.com/ Lake George: The lake may be a bit bigger than you are looking for and has a lot of power boat traffic, but you could still explore some of the bays and islands on the lake. You can rent from the Lake George Kayak Co. http://www.lakegeorgekayak.com/ Lake Placid: You can paddle Mirror Lake, Lake Placid, the Saranac Lakes, or even the Raquette River. EMS in Placid rents kayaks.” 5:18:57 AM 6/30/08 “Stay away from that crazy woman on Staten Island.” 5:34:02 AM 6/30/08 “Fro night life the inn in Long Lake is great.” 7:42:06 AM 6/30/08 “Try the Upper Peninsula of Michigan---Tarabull and I would be happy to take you guys out!” 8:02:41 AM 6/30/08 “Those are some great ideas, Zac. The Old Forge area sounds like a great destination as it would be less drive time. If we end up near Lake Placid, I'd want to hit one of the 46'ers for a dayhike. OK...now you got me thinking!?!?!?!? And I'd love to spend some time with y'all in the UP, but for the time we have we'd spend more of it in the car than anywhere else. If we had a week, I'd surely be up to it.” 4:09:37 AM 7/01/08 “If we end up near Lake Placid, I'd want to hit one of the 46'ers for a dayhike. OK...now you got me thinking!?!?!?!? Did you know you can paddle across Lake Placid to Whiteface Landing and take the trail up Whiteface?” 4:36:19 AM 7/01/08 “Stay away from that crazy woman on Staten Island.” Nimblefoot 8:34:02 AM 6/30/08 what's you takin bout willis? I second the Daks. not sure of the night life, but the paddling is great!” 6:26:15 AM 7/01/08 Are They Swarming? “Zac/Doug, how are the black flies up there this time of year...like if we head north THIS weekend?” 3:57:54 AM 7/02/08 “Generally the black fly season is over by now. Although I did get swarmed a few years ago on the 4th. I don't think this will be the case this year, as the season started towards the end of May. Don't quote me on that, because I haven't been able to make a trip to the Adirondacks since Memorial Day weekend. The mosquitoes and noseeums will be out at night. P.S. if possible gas up before you enter the park. You can expect to pay $0.10 to $0.50 more per gallon than outside the blueline. last edited: 7/02/08 4:40:39 AM” 4:38:06 AM 7/02/08 “i think the rule is May 16 to June 16 but it also depends on the spring, as it was short this year. They were biting up in the catskills last weekend.” 6:16:33 AM 7/02/08 “I know you were lookin' for a lake but the Greenbrier River in WV is wonderful to kayak and explore. It's 70 miles and easy to make a one way trip. The Greenbrier River trail runs beside it, it passes several long railroad bridges and tunnels you can get out and explore.” 9:26:37 AM 7/02/08 “Mmmmm, Greenbrier River. That trail was the Greenbrier Branch of the C&O Railway that ran from Ronceverte to Durbin where it linked up with the Western Maryland out of Elkins. The WM line is also a rail trail north of Durbin, but the tunnel near Glady is in bad shape. You can walk over the mountain on the road and get back onto the trail as it heads down into Shavers Fork drainage. The tour line out of Elkins goes to the High Falls now, but it only gets there once or twice a day. Still a great campsite, except for the wooden viewing platform that intrudes over the east bank. It's not the same since the 2 a.m. train of empties headed back up to the mines and the flanged wheels screamed as they rounded the curve. Sounded like banshees from hell when you woke up at 2 a.m.” 10:08:19 AM 7/02/08 “We did it in a canoe so we could fish and we got enough to eat each night. Then I rode to the nearest tunnel from Marlinton on my bike once we got done and drove back to get our other car. Do it in the fall when the leaves are changing, best views, quiet too!” 10:12:28 AM 7/02/08
