Went for a weekend road trip up to VT to climb Camel's Hump and Mt. Mansfield and to check out come falls. Had a great time, very nice area. Camel's Hump was a highlight with a dramatic summit above tree line. The views were hazy, but great. We hiked for over an hour in a torrential thunderstorm on the way down.

We hiked up to Mansfield via the Hells Brook Trail, it climbs 2,600 feet in 1.3 miles. One of the toughest trails I've done, second to the Huntingdon Ravine Trail off of Mt. Washington in the Whites. The summit was socked in and very windy.

All the waterfalls were great. Bingham Falls is really awesome with great swimming holes.

Had a great trip.

The wind actually blew us up on one pitch. At the summit we were greeted with 100mph wind gusts and I had to crawl the last 100 feet or so, because the wind kept knocking me over. One of the gusts ripped Sherpaman's pack cover right off his pack.

WK,

It was very much like the monsoon we experienced on the Quehanna.

I was backpacking in Vermont this weekend, too. I took a small group (7 people and two dogs) - hoping that predicted rain showers would come late in the day both days and we could stay dry.

We lost a little time when I was confused about a new blue blazed trail and a lot more time as one member of a group was much slower than anticipated (a very nice person, but over packed - started with 8 pounds of water! - and not aware of how much this would slow her down vs. day hikes). Since I was responsible, I was sweep and stayed with the slowest member of the group and got totally drenched before hitting the shelter Saturday. Fortunately she had a great attitude, so I felt OK about getting drenched with her. We did better Sunday, and were driving home before the rain hit.

Damn, I was in Vermont too three days last week! And NH three days before that. We stopped at the Ben and Jerry's Factory and got the tour, freakin sweet. Mount Washington in NH was having hail when I went up it.
