Switching from Comcast
I almost signed up for more services from Comcast when I read in the local paper how Comcast paid homeless people to go into a hearing to fill up seats so people who opposed them couldn't get in. Now I hear that the reason a decent (not great) TV show host on Comcast's channel was fired was that he attacked Bill O'Reilly. My wife won't do without cable, so I'll probably have to write my city councelors and hope they'll authorizae a second company to provide cable service in my town.

I hate CrumbCrust, but they carry the Phillies and Flyers, which we cannot get on Dish because CrumbCrust televises the games and won't let other providers carry them (which is their business prerogative). So I'm stuck.

Bill O'Reilly is a tool. Comcast sucks for not standing up to Murdoch for Barry Nolan.

I can't wait for my contract to be up so I can dump Comcast and sign up for FIOS. Several of my neighbors have it. Much better than cable.

Good for you Violin. That's the way these things should be handled. Voting with your feet. Of course if it were really important and ya really wanted to make a statement you could void the contract and pay the termination penalty fee.

What's fois btw?

Stratus - no Fios in town yet, but I signed up yesterday for early notification. I'm not mad enough yet to get a dish. I'd drop cable and go to broadcast and Netflix - but my wife and step-son won't.

NoProb: I got no prob with them paying homeless people, but when its done to pack a hearing room with limited seating capacity so people who disagree with Comcast can't speak, I think its pretty slimy. It was enough to convince me not to switch to the package (voice, cable, internet) Comcast was offering at a great price.

Stove: I don't read the daily Kos, except for a couple times when there has been a link here. I got it from a local weekly:

Nigal: FiOS is a Fiber Optic network. I think the S is for Service. The buzz is that it provides a broader band than what was out there before.

edit: or maybe the S is for System???

you all go sign up for FiOS... tell me how it works out for you after you switch back to your cablemodem. LOL!

i totally believe that more serious competition (ANY competition) for the high-bandwidth services in homes is really important but the technology is what it is. the cable companies dropped big bucks putting in the DOCSYS infrastructure -but- they are the only vendors that have a wire into the house that actually can carry the kind of bandwidth consumers want. they will have their day and then it will be over... but until then get used to living under their thumb. the government isn't going to watch out for you and you can vote with your pocketbook but for now it will mean taking a hit in performance.

Comcast Considering 250GB Cap, Overage Fees

"Comcast would be the first major U.S. ISP to charge overage fees, and once that door is open, there's nothing to stop the caps from constantly getting lower and the per-GB fees from perpetually getting higher in an uncompetitive and poorly regulated market."

My home is at the end of the Verizon line, the farthest you can get from the office. When they tried to hook up my internet with the phone service it killed both. I cancelled both and told them I couldn't get a signal, so the cancellation was their fault, not mine. The b@$t@rd$ still tried to charge me an early termination fee.

So I have CrumbCrust cable and internet, alas, an my cell phone.

Of course, I no longer get regular visits from Verizon repair dudes, but what the hey, they weren't interesting conversationalists and whatever work they did only lasted till the day after their truck left.

Cable ads attack FiOS, confuse consumers

I realize this isn't the first time there's ever been a misleading ad, but it does go to show you how much the cable companies fear fiber optic.

That's how cable works most of the time. You get a yearly contract for special packages and prices. I guess I'm a tool too, as I have a two year contract for cable/internet/phone through Brighthouse. But, at least I'm not a d!ck.

We have that fiber optic business in our neighborhood now, through At&T. The neighbors are all in love with it. Probably will be our next move unless the cable company will keep the package price we have now. Chances of that are pretty slim. We're due to go up $50-75 per month in August, when our contract is up.

I really enjoy the pixellation and digital freezing.

It's kinda hard to follow the flow of a program, say, on the History Channel when the pic freezes and the sound goes out for three seconds out of every ten.

I wonder what the narrator was saying 1/3 of the time.

And yes, the monthly bill is for the full amount, not 2/3.

unfortunately, comcast is the only option in my area for hi speed internet if i dont wanna pay out the ass for wireless internet. it didnt work the day i installed it, and when a tech came out and fixed it a few days later, the internet and the tv went down after a few hours. i've already told them i'm going to dsl as soon as it becomes available in my area. if i dont have any more problems, maybe i'll back off that threat

comcast internet access rocks. fastest pipe in town. mucho cheaper if you factor the speed of what you get. i have telecommuted over the service for almost 4 years now. it isn't problem free but it's pretty close. i use it a LOT.

I have no choice either. I was at the end of the line for Verizon, and when I tried to get dsl, it screwed up my phone service as well. I got neither. So I cancelled for lack of a signal and they tried to hit me with an early termination bill.

And yes, I get that pixellation and freeze-frame deal too. I thought it was just our local CrumbCrust provider, but apparently it's nation wide. I also hate the way that CrumbCrust SportsNet is broadcast at a whisper and when you change channels the next one comes through at 849 decibels and blasts the neighbors out. You'd think they'd have a volume control to deal with that. Cripes, for $125 a month they should be able to go out and buy one after a few months.
Geobeet

Volume control is too hi-tech, apparently.

I should be shopping for another boob tube fairly soon.   I remember a few years ago a hot feature was a volume limiter so other channels (and commercials) didn't blow you out of the water.
